Cramping can be prevented by increasing your potassium intake. Your muscles need potassium to expand and contract (basically what's needed for muscle movement). When they don't have enough potassium, they basically freeze up and can't move. So when they freeze up while they are contracted, that's what's called a cramp. A good source of patassium is bananas.

According to Medicine.net.........cramps are caused by the following:

"For cramps that are caused by vigorous physical activity, authorities recommend stretching before and after the activity, along with an adequate warm-up and cool down. Good hydration before, during, and after the activity is important, as well as replacement of lost electrolytes (especially sodium and potassium, which are major components of perspiration). Excessive fatigue, especially in warm weather, should be avoided. "

Usually electrolytes can be replaced by drinks like Gatorade, or something similar. This also assists in your re-hydration.

Hope this helps you.

I tried banana and water for when I got cramps but it didn't work then someone suggested more salt so I started eating a small amount of black olives before each game. Worked a treat no more cramps :) The olives are a healthy alternative to other foods high is salt because they also give you beneficial olive oil.

All of the other suggestions were great, but also remember to drink water a few hours before you start playing. This will help a great deal. You need to drink water about two hours before your game, during the game, and two hours after to replenish lost fluids. Drinks like Gatorade will also help.

You need to eat high potassium, Banana is a great one. Also hydrate, and hydrate. Stretch and stretch. I know what you are talking about, I have been playing soccer for 16 years, and also do Karate, my calf gets tired or if my body do not have enough fluid, I get cramps. Eating Banana helped me great deal.

Make sure that you are taking in enough electrolyte minerals. They are potassium, sodium, calcium, and magnesium especially if you are exercising for more than an hour.

A good electrolyte replenishment drink (check the label) during the games should work.

Here are some links to info about the electrolytes.
