Why is it that when I watch DVDs the music is so loud I can never hear what the people are saying. I have tried the different sound settings on my tv (true surround, simulated, and effect off) but it doesn't change anything. Is it just a crappy DVD player? The tv is a Sony Trinatron 32" flat screen HDTV. The DVD player is a Panasonic VCR DVD combo.

I don't have surround sound speakers. It is just the speakers that are on the tv. Ture Surround is just a sound option on my tv

try looking on the DVD player menu for a button that say dynamic range it will say High med low

switch it too low, this will cut down the load parts and bring up the soft parts

another thing they might call it is smart sound

Have you got a surround speaker system.Do you use a separate speaker for the middle or is the TV's speakers used for the center. You should be able to control the volume of the front left and right main speakers and the center speaker (s) by either turning the volume up for the center or down for the main front speakers.
Most DVDs have a very high dynamic range which can be overpowering in a listening room (ratio between sound recorded very low and very high) See if your DVD player has an adjustment for the dynamic range. If it has turn the dynamic range adjustment to min. or low and that will make the quieter passages louder which should make the dialog easier to hear.

I hope it works for you good luck.

Some TVs have other sound settings like music, movie, sports, talk, etc besides the simulated surround mode. Some movies have poor dialog levels just because of the way they were mastered and seem explode in your face during a action etc.

Feature films on DVDs are mixed for a theatrical experience. The music and sfx are meant to be much louder than the dialogue. Very different from TV shows.

If having it too loud is a problem (neighbors, sleeping kids, etc.) I suggest getting wireless headphones for when you watch movies at night. You could also try turning down your subwoofer.

If you have a 5.1 or better surround sound set up, make sure your middle speaker is turned up. The voice is supposed to be in the middle and the music in the front Left and Right speakers.
