I'm not an Atheist, and I'm not a Christian. I find my own spirituality.
But in my experience, Christians have gotten mad at me for thinking Jesus was a man. Hey, many Atheists don't even believe he existed! I have great respect for him and how close to God he was.
Why does it seem they get more mad at me than Atheists who don't believe in Jesus at all?

S, there are many Atheists that don't believe Jesus existed. There actually is little evidence outside the Bible that he existed, you should read up on it before you criticise someone.

I know what you are saying and I've felt the same way. I'm muslim and muslims do follow the teachings of Jesus and we respect him as we respect all Prophets but christians here do seem to get mad when I say that. I would think it would be better that we at least respect him and follow his teachings but many here say this is blasphemy and dislike islam because of this :-(

Number 1, people got mad at you for thinking Jesus was a man? I don't think so, dear.
Number 2, you are mistaken about atheists. Atheists acknowledge that Jesus was an actual human being. The thing you may be referring to regarding their beliefs (and Jews-who ALSO acknowledge his existence)is whether or not Jesus was the Savior of all humanity, the way Christians believe Jesus was. Atheists do not believe Jesus as Savior, they don't believe in God, and they don't believe in the existence of a higher being. That is atheism. They feel that when we are on earth, we are here, when we die, we are in the ground. That is it.
Number 3, know what you are talking about before you ask a question. It could have been an interesting one if you only knew what you were talking about.

Well, I would guess that it is because Jesus being God is the cornerstone of our faith and salvation.

If you want to look at the evidence that He is God, check out a book called The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel. It was started by an athiest who has a law degree and he set out to look at the evidence in a way that a court would try to do. This book examines the evidence about whether or not He was God.

I think that it is widely accepted that Jesus existed, He is referenced in history written outside the Bible, like Josephus.

Well, to play devil (err, Christian's) advocate, you're denying the person they consider to be God. I could see how that would be offensive to them. As an atheist, I have no idea whether Jesus actually existed. Maybe he did, and if he did, I don't know how accurate the scriptures are.

I'm satisfied to say that the story of Jesus portrays someone who is morally ahead of his time. If you disagree with me on this, it does nothing to challenge my belief system. Whereas if you challenge his status as divine, it's a direct threat to the Christian belief system.

That's why.

well because according to christians, jesus wasn't just close to god...he IS god! that's like the foundation of our whole belief - if you believe jesus is god then you get to go to heaven, the ultimate prize. to say that jesus was a man, a great one or not, is like insisting to atheists that god does exist, when their belief system tells them that god doesn't exist. so when you say that jesus was just a man - atheists aren't going to care because they think *similar* to the way you do - either that he didn't exist, or they think he was just another human being like you and me. but christians care because it contradicts our whole belief system.

Ah sweetie, not everyone looks at you that way surely? Do you know any true Christians personally. If you don't, get to know some. Those who really love the Lord and try to live for Him are pretty nice and would treat you with love & respect, whatever your beliefs.

Jesus was a man more than 2000 years ago. Now he seats in the right hand of his father until all his enemies will be annihilated.

Stand firm in your beliefs and do not waiver from the judgment of others. Christians are good people, but the "Stereotypical Christians" often like to shove their way on others and judge those who don't accept.
