I believe that Superman is portrayed as all the good that man can be, and as such, he is portrayed as a minor god. I believe that I have heard documentaries stating this. He is often portrayed similar to Jesus, but I do not think that Superman is really supposed to look that way, but rather like a messiah, a saviour, but not as the Messiah, the Saviour, or the Son of God. If memory serves, Superman's creators were Jewish.
I think that his name means that he is the final product of what man could ultimately become. I am not sure if it means he is still man, just short of being a god, or just barely a god.
Regardless, he most certainly is not supposed to be an angel, because he brings to us no messages from God (nor does he go back and forth between God and man), and of course Superman is fictitious.

The Superman story is a metaphor for the Jesus story. Jorel sent his son Kalel to save the world, to be a shining example to the people, etc. etc.
