Be careful - since your hardware is new there may not be XP drivers for it. When I tried to install XP on my computer it insisted that I didn't have a hard drive. The problem was that it didn't recognize my hard drive controller, and I couldn't find XP drivers. Luckily for me Vista recognized the hardware and installed fine, otherwise I would have had an expensive boat anchor. Also, be aware that you will lose all of the software and data that came with your new PC, since you'll have to format the drive before installing XP.

Well, you can try to get a student discount if you're a student, but I'm not sure where to go for that. Check yahoo search engine for student discounts- I know my brother got his Flash from a student discount site.
One problem though- you cannot "downgrade" your OS. You will have to reformat and repartition your C:/ drive or other primary/active partition, and then install windows XP. This means you will lose all data, drivers, factory settings, etc etc etc, the list goes on and on. CD drivers, printer drivers, antivirus software.. Everything.
Also, Vista is a superior operating system. The only real problems with it is just that it's new and different from XP, meaning it's going to be somewhat buggy, but thats what updates are for.
So if you're prepared to do that... Go ahead. Email me if you need more help.

Good choice! :D XP's the way to go for now..
Look for OEM versions of Windows XP on eBay. You should be able to find them for cheaper than 200 dollars. OEM versions are usually cheaper because they don't come with a box and directions, just the software that you need.

Makes sense. You can get deals with windows xp if you buy it with a licensed item. Note that that item can even be a cheap mouse. But this changes from time to time. You can ask around at any smaller PC shops. But $200 is not so bad I had to pay more it went down in price.

A couple of ideas:
The student version is a full version and is considerable cheaper. The downfall is that it is not upgradeable.
Of course, if you still have the software from your old computer you could reinstall it.
