Because they think it's paints an unfavorable picture of Persian history. They object because it's not "historically accurate". I'd say they have grounds for this objection IF the movie were attempting to actually be historically accurate. As the movie is FICTIONAL and based only very very very loosely on historical events (and doesn't even TRY to reflect the true events), I'd say they should shut up and enjoy the cinema for what it is - entertainment.

Well in the historic event 300 portrays; hundreds of thousands of Persian soldiers, the ancestors of the Iranians, were held off for several days by 300 Spartan soldiers (who fought to the last man) giving the rest of the Greeks time to muster their defenses to meet and ultimately defeat the Persian invasion. I guess the Iranians don't want to be reminded of their epic defeat by a vastly outnumbered foe, especially when they are saber rattling and trying to become a regional power.

Because they believe they were portrayed unfairly in the movie and because the movie is historically inaccurate.
What people fail to realize is that this is a Hollywood movie in all its glory. Of course it is historically inaccurate. This movie is not a documentary. Even movies that are "based on actual events" are not completely accurate.
In addition Iran did not become a country until about 1200 years later. The Persian Empire was composed of many conquered nations.
People tend to forget that movies are not reality.

Because their culture minister thinks it is American propaganda designed to undermine the "values" of their Islamic revolution from 1979. The movie has the Spartans fight the Persians, who were the forerunners to the Iranians. These guys will do anything to deride influence from the free world as anti-Islamic propaganda.
Fortunately, many Iranian youth are starting to think for themselves. Many are tired of the stupid and restrictive dictates by head clerics. Many want to work or live abroad. They're rebelling against the insanity.
Sometimes, a movie is a form of art and not reproduction from the real world. 300 is an example of this. Sometimes people invest too much in art as a reflection of life, especially when their government cultivates an "us vs. them" mentality.

In Iran, people are taught to whine when someone says something that they might possibly consider an insult to them. I wonder if it is mainly just the government that does most of the whining, rather than the common person.

because it portrays our culture wrongly. americans are so ignorant, and this movie will add to their misconceptions. basically in 300 they are showing that we were ******* and the greeks were the true warriors. i find it offensive that they are disrespecting xerses and our culture. how would you like it if iran make a movie on america saying all americans are white fat christians who sit on their butt the whole day, and make immigrants do all the work. you government is really good at portraying other countries badly, and shows itself as the best. you are such bullies. as for persians, we were the mightiest empire on earth in reality.
