The pain before a tooth canal is the worst. I just had one done 5 days ago. I was scared to death. I just knew something bad was going to happen. My heart was pounding out of my chest. Then I realized that he was doing the root canal and I couldn't feel a thing. My mouth was just wide open. I slowly realized that hey, I was going to be all right. It's five days later and while yes it's a touch sore. (Not noticeable much at all). The pain before was worse than childbirth. BTW - My root canal took 1 hour. That's numbing and everything. Good luck, its nothing....

Yes it hurts but they'll give you medication both during and after. A crown (also called a cap) is a fake tooth that fits over the remainder of the tooth. They usually have to schedule at least 2 appointments. One so they can drill and take the root out and make an impression for the crown to fit correctly. Then one a little later on to fill it, check it for infection and put the cap on. There may be a 3rd appointment if they can't take an impression of the tooth during the first appointment. Each appointment can take about an hour. It's not a lot of fun but NOT getting it done is much worse and can cause you to have side effects you don't want. Try to calm yourself before you go and breathe deeply while you're there to relax and it will all be over soon.
They sometimes put pins into the tooth so the new cap and filling material has something to adhere to. This means they will be putting a lot of pressure on your jaw but it doesn't really hurt because the root is gone and/or medicated by that time.

yes it does hurt. if you go into hospital for it they give you lots of painkillers at the same time as they make you sleepy, but if youre in the chair they give you tablets (usually panadiene) and it hurts for about a week. but if they're a good dentist, it shouldnt really hurt, it will be more like an ache. try eating lots of soup, mashed potato and soft things.
a crown is a 'cap' for your tooth - when they do a root canal, all thats really left of your tooth is an empty shell. so they put the crown on top to protect whats left of the tooth and to keep your bite (the way your teeth sit) normal.
the whole thing could take up to 1.5hrs depending on which tooth, what type of crown etc.
but DON'T WORRY, you wont feel a thing till 2-4hrs after the procedure and after that it should be a dull ache.
hope this helps!
(im a dental assistant btw) :)

Yeah, it hurts, during, and for a while after. A crown is a piece of fake tooth (porcelin I think) that goes over the left overs of a tooth after a root canal. It is much stronger then a normal filling, and much more expensive. After a root canal your tooth has no nerve left in it, therefore it's not getting any nutrients to the remeinder of the tooth. Eventually it will become really brittle and just fall to bits. That's why they will suggest a crown.
A root canal is usually done over a few visits, because they have to put pins down into your gums. They put temporary fillings in between visits. Mine took 3 visits, and about 5 hours all up

I have had 8 root canals done. Here's how it went: first the gigantic needle of novacaine! That, to me, hurts the most - BUTthen during the actual surgery (especially if you opt for the laughing gas - I don't tho) you feel NOTHING. BUT then, oh boy, when that novacaine starts wearing off - ooooeeee! It's like a dull but continuous throbbing. My endodontist gives me 800 mg of Motrin and I might as well have eaten a Skittles! I take 2! But, it doesn't last long - you'll be up and running in 1 or 2 days at most! AND that tooth will never hurt you again! Good luck! It won't be bad - I'm the biggest baby in the world and if I can do it...yes, you! :)

you will have slight pain immediately after the numbness of the root canal treatment. But that is just temporary and will goes off with most probably one or two pain killer. After the root canal treatment complete, you shouldn't feel the toothache. Crown is a "cap" that cover the clinical crown of a tooth. If you really take good care of the tooth, the crown will last long.

I can only tell you that when I had two Root Canals they were very infected. The Dentist gave me some strong antibiotics and packed my two teeth with something and sent me home for a few days. When she performed the procedure she reccommended nitric-oxide which would take the edge off of the pain of the nerves under the two teeth. The procedure was virtually pain-free, except a few slight but quick pains a few times.
