I think it might be starting too, or maybe I'm just more exposed to things now that I'm no longer living with my parents.

Crime was on a decrease PERCENTAGE wise in our country for the past two decades or so, from its high in the 80's.

But based on the increase in population that we have experienced, the NUMBER of crimes has actually increased. More crimes, more news coverage, appearance of a situation worse than what it is.

That is just simple statistics.

However, having said that, I can tell you that Michigan is seeing a big increase in the percentage of crime, especially in Detroit. That is what happens when poverty increases (like in the 80's) and the under-educated and badly-raised cannot control themselves and have to eat (or buy bling, depends on the neighborhood). Unemployment breeds poverty, breeds crime, breeds corruption.

Reality sucks.

No violent crime has for the most part diminished as a percentage of the population. The reason people believe crime is rising is two fold. First,
many activities that are harmless have been criminalized by the government in it's efforts to
control the populace. This skews criminal statistics. Secondly, the modern media feeds like
sharks on sensationlistic crimes in order to garner ratings. We are aware of crimes committed hundreds or thousands of miles away every day.
50 years ago we would not have know about these occurrences. This make people believe more crime occurs, what is really happening is more crime is being publicized for ratings.

The degree of violence is increasing. With the rise of street gangs we are seeing young people who are extremely violent without a purpose committing atrocious acts. And in some cases, especially domestic violence and acquaintance rape, there is a much higher incidence of reporting the violence. It's not just you, it is getting worse in degree even if the number of incidents is not increasing as much.

Well, violent crimes have gone up since Bush took office thanks to his catering to the wealthy and cutting budgets that would bring more police patrolling the streets and afterschool activities for youths who have nowhere else to go before their parents are home. Face it, violent crimes always go up when there's a Republican running this country.

Crime rates are rising from year to year, and that is due to the laws becoming more and more liberal. Immigration laws had changed, more crime invading this great country.

We need to speak up.

I think so. With society drifting away from religion, family values, drug abuse, and the media - it's all about sex. I'm in my 30's and it seems to be getting worse from what I see. People are nuts!
