How long after having a baby are you considered at risk for post-partum? And how can you tell if you have it or if you are just kinda 'down'?

I feel like if I talked to a dr, people will think I'm just being dramatic or faking or something.

Usually it's considered post-partum depression until the baby's 1st birthday. Anytime after that is just regular depression or another kind of depression.

These are the most common signs & symptoms:

Feelings of anxiety, guilt, sadness, worthlessness, restlessness or irritability
Sleep disturbances
Lack of interest in social or other activities you previously enjoyed
Lack of feeling or feelings of resentment, anger or fear about motherhood, your partner or your child
Trouble focusing
Eating more or less than usual
Unexplained, uncontrollable weeping
Headaches, chest pains of other physical symptoms with no other apparent reason

If you think you have it, then you really need to talk to a doctor. You can either ignore what "people" think or it can be a private thing that no one has to know about. That is entirely up to you. But, please, get treatment!

You can start feeling the symptoms of PPD as soon as the baby is born. A "just kinda down" feeling will go away. A post partum feeling will not. You will stop enjoying activities you used to enjoy, you will feel exhausted all the time (but thats common even in women who dont have PPD), you will be ready to cry at the drop of a hat, you will question your mothering abilities, and/or you will feel like you cant take care of your baby. If you have PPD, you may not even want to take care of your baby. One of my friends friends had PPD and her husband once found her in the bathroom after he came home from work crying. She had left the baby crying in the living room all by itself. It wasnt her fault though, she had PPD. Her husband took care of the baby and called a doctor for her. He also had a family member come over while he was at work to help his wife out with the baby until she felt better.
All the things listed above, may be a symptom of PPD. You're not being dramatic if you talk to a doctor. PPD is a very real and very serious thing. You should talk to your doctor. You will feel better and might feel more able to be a great mom to your baby.

The hormonal changes from post pregnancy can
put you at risk for depression and other problems for months to perhaps 2 years after delivery. If you are experiencing symptoms of post partum depression seek help. There are therapies that can help you deal with the problem. But your doctor cannot help you if you do not seek help.

If you feel any type of depression anytime after you have a baby you should tell the doctor. You do not want to let it go at all. Call them, or go to the Doctors Office and they will help you.

It has been my understanding - anytime within the year following childbirth you are at risk of PPD. You may also want to get a thyroid panel done.
