Formula 1 uses a fairly straight forward points system - you win, you get the most points. And points are only for where you finish. Most all points systems in motorsports start out this way, but over time you often times wind up at a point where one team or driver dominates and others in the sport get tired of chasing them... or whatever other factors come around to lead one group in a sport to feel they are somehow being left behind.

So, the governing body tends to make changes, either to the regulations (what we have seen most often in F1), or to the points scheme which then allows lesser teams to stay in the hunt. The later is preferred by outside interests (such as network broadcasters). So, you begin to award points for things outside winning, such as qualifying results or laps led or fastest lap or whatever you want!

NASCAR is as attuned, if not moreso, to marketing than any other motorsport right now. They do a great job of marketing themselves. Part of marketing is not just to the fans, but also to the sponsors and people they directly sell to (networks and cable operators). The last group is most interested in having championships decided as late as possible, so the more points available, and then more they are spread out becomes desirable. But it also leads to less simplicity in the system.

The simple answer, because NFL football was destroying NASCAR in September, October and November

The points system used to be very easy to understand, but since they wanted to spice up the competition to compete with the NFL, they went to the chase for the cup.

In nascar the last few races of the season usually didn't mean anything torward the championship so they brought in the chase to make it more exciting for fans. They've added other rules for excitement also.
They're like a reality show they want to add twists and turns.

NASCAR was developed from it's own roots. Night and day to F1. It's not complicated, use a calculator if you can't do it in your head.

Complicated? Based on Place, with 5 bonus for leading a lap and 5 bonus for leading the most laps? Gross *** rednecks can figure it out but you can't?
