My little girl sometimes lays awake at night in her room (it's not too hot or too cold as I go in and touch her and that doesn't wake her up...she's already awake several hours after she goes to bed) and just looks around. I wonder if she's depressed, can't sleep, or just what she's thinking about....she's so happy, giggles, laughs, plays, says "Momma" and "Da Da" reapeatedly during the day, etc. Should I be concerned?

Yes, she has a nightlight. Mommy and Daddy, both, tuck her in at night and give kisses except for the nights that Mommy has to work. Then Daddy puts her to bed.

You should speak to her pediatrician about this, but honestly? Some kids are just like that. I was the kid who like NEVER slept...I've been like that my whole life. I was never depressed as a kid. I would lay awake for hours after going to bed, just thinking or making up stories in my head or remembering things, or trying to figure things out, etc.
I don't exactly know what causes that, but it CAN be rather disruptive to a child's well-being if they aren't getting enough sleep, especially when they start going to school. Is your daughter getting a sufficiant amount of sleep at night? Does she nap during the day? How many naps and for how long and when are they? For instance, she may be ready to cut down to just one nap a day instead of two. Or she may be sleeping too much during these nap-times. Or she may be napping too soon to her bedtime. I try to get my 14 month old to take her afternoon nap no later than 4 pm (she usually sleeps from 30-60 minutes), that way she's totally ready for bed by 8:30 or 9 pm. But my daughter is also showing signs of becoming the "sleep-hating kid" like I was. =P So some days it more difficult than others to get her to take naps and go to bed at regular times.

Anyway, I hope everything works out for yah!

If she were depressed she would be quiet and acting sad or maybe sick during the day.
It sounds like she gets scard at night. Which is perfectly normal for young children to get scard at night, its dark outside, there's noises like the wind, shadows.

Does she have a nightlight? Do you read her stories and tuck her in before bed and give kisses?

Our little girl has trouble sleeping by herself... our boys had already transitioned to their own bedrooms by her age (She is 3) If we put her to bed in her bed she comes in and lays down at the foot of our bed later usually. You might try laying down with her and see if she falls asleep... I remember even when I was a kid that my parents bed always seemed better than my own, especially if I was sick. If something is bothering her it might help if she had someone to snuggle up with... heck that even helps us as adults.

Ask a doctor, but it seems like you a being oversensative about your child. Can you keep her up longer during the day so that she is more tired?

ask a dr anyhow.
