+ Sin +

Sin is a deliberate thought, word, deed, or omission contrary to the eternal law of God.

In other words, sin is anything that hurts your relationship with God.

Sin is a personal act. Moreover, we have a responsibility for the sins committed by others when we cooperate in them:
- by participating directly and voluntarily in them;
- by ordering, advising, praising, or approving them;
- by not disclosing or not hindering them when we have an obligation to do so;
- by protecting evil-doers.

+ Mortal and Venial Sin +

1 John 5:16-17 - If anyone sees his brother sinning, if the sin is not deadly, he should pray to God and he will give him life. This is only for those whose sin is not deadly. There is such a thing as deadly sin, about which I do not say that you should pray. All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that is not deadly.

Luke 12:46-48 - Then that servant's master will come on an unexpected day and at an unknown hour and will punish him severely and assign him a place with the unfaithful. That servant who knew his master's will but did not make preparations nor act in accord with his will shall be beaten severely; and the servant who was ignorant of his master's will but acted in a way deserving of a severe beating shall be beaten only lightly. Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.

Catholics believe:

Mortal sin is a grave infraction of the law of God that destroys the divine life in the soul of the sinner (sanctifying grace), constituting a turn away from God. For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must be present: grave matter, full knowledge of the evil of the act, and full consent of the will.

Venial sin is a sin which does not destroy the divine life in the soul, as does mortal sin, though it diminishes and wounds it. Venial sin is the failure to observe necessary moderation, in lesser matters of the moral law, or in grave matters acting without full knowledge or complete consent.

But continual venial sin can slowly but surely totally separate you from God, placing you into the state of mortal sin.

+ With love in Christ.

The term "sin" was actually an archery term; it meant the how far the arrow missed the bullseye. To sin then was to miss the mark. The Bible says that all have sinned (missed God's standard) and fall short of His glory (Romans 3:23).

We discover what God says about sin in the Bible -every thought, deed or word contrary to His standard that He gives would be a sin. Lying, stealing, adultery are sins as are prayerlessness, failure to do good. failure to love God with all your heart and having impure thoughts. The Ten Commandments give a list of things God wants us to do/not do. It is our nature as humans, ever since Adam and Eve, to substitute our judgment for God's and disobey Him.

Some people like to think that some sins like murder are worse than others (like lying). From God's perspective, all sin is lawlessness and separates us from God. The gossip is just as desperately in need of salvation as is the mass murderer.

The good news is that Jesus paid the penalty for ALL sins by His death on the cross. (His death is able to make this payment because He is both infinite God and sinless human AT THE SAME TIME.) He offers forgiveness to all who would receive it, but He forces His gift on no one.

The only sin that cannot be forgiven is the rejection of this gift -it's not that the sin wasn't paid for by the cross, it's just that a pardon is not a pardon if you refuse to accept it.

For Catholics, sin is anything that separates us from God.

Some may think that a murder is the dame as stealing a pack of gum, but that is not true. While all sin separates us from God, there are differences in the severity. Denying someone there life is very different that swiping gum. God is as merciful as He is just- I can't see anyone thinking both people would gop to hell over those crimes.

All sins can be forgiven- except ONE- that is, final impenitence. That means that right up to the moment of death someone refuses to repent because they believe their sins are unforgiveable. You can't repent after you die- that would be like making your decision on "Let's Make a Deal" AFTER you see what is really behind the curtain.

Catholics experience the love and mercy of God in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. In Reconciliation, a Catholic confesses their sins before a priest ( who represents Christ before us). The priest can NEVER tell anyone what we say. Then the priest offers us God's forgiveness for our sins. It is FAR from as easy as it sounds. "Telling your sins straight to God" is a major cop out....but there is no way to describe the experience of the Sacrament of Reconciliation to someone who has never experienced it! It is an sbsolutely amazing encounter with the Lord!

Sin can be defined by two criteria.
1. Does the act or thought contradict God's commandments?
2. Does the act or thought contradict Jesus words and actions?

Other than having another God before him or using God's name in vain, I don't think there is any sin that is greater than any other. God forgives all sin of those that believe in him but he does expect people to repent (be sorry for and change).

The only sin is not learning the lesson related to the action. The positive side to sin is learning that what you did, produced results that were in some way destructive/degrading and committing to changing your ways in the future. It is not necessary to put the label "sin" on your actions. Recognition of the effects of your choices, and the committment to change for the better, is adequate.

Sin is that which separates us from God and his love, which separates us for brothers and loving them.

Definition of sin according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church:
1849 Sin is an offense against reason, truth, and right conscience; it is failure in genuine love for God and neighbor caused by a perverse attachment to certain goods. It wounds the nature of man and injures human solidarity. It has been defined as "an utterance, a deed, or a desire contrary to the eternal law."121

1850 Sin is an offense against God: "Against you, you alone, have I sinned, and done that which is evil in your sight."122 Sin sets itself against God's love for us and turns our hearts away from it. Like the first sin, it is disobedience, a revolt against God through the will to become "like gods,"123 knowing and determining good and evil. Sin is thus "love of oneself even to contempt of God."124 In this proud self- exaltation, sin is diametrically opposed to the obedience of Jesus, which achieves our salvation.125

1851 It is precisely in the Passion, when the mercy of Christ is about to vanquish it, that sin most clearly manifests its violence and its many forms: unbelief, murderous hatred, shunning and mockery by the leaders and the people, Pilate's cowardice and the cruelty of the soldiers, Judas' betrayal - so bitter to Jesus, Peter's denial and the disciples' flight. However, at the very hour of darkness, the hour of the prince of this world,126 the sacrifice of Christ secretly becomes the source from which the forgiveness of our sins will pour forth inexhaustibly.

if we talk about the definition of sin in the bible it is a transgression of the law (or the word) of God many people wonder what about the people who do not even know what is contain in the bible, how could they transgress it, but the bible has a statement about this: In Rome 2:11 For there is no respect of persons with God.
Rom 2:12 for as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;
Rom 2:13 (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.
Rom 2:14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:
Rom 2:15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;) “ In this verse it is clear that even though the person did not know what is contained in the law but God put a law on their heart ( for example; Bible said “Deut 5:17 Thou shalt not kill. Even though you didn’t know this verse, you know deep in your heart that it is wrong to kill someone)

The contributing factor to make one person sin is his willingness to do it and not to do it (committing and omitting) like in the verses “Jam 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” you will see in this verse that the very moment you know the good thing you must do and you willingly refuse it to do it not you are already committing a sin (so this is a perfect example of omitting and committing: you omitting to do good and committing not to do the good that you knew)
There are level of sin and it is fall into two category, it was written in “1Jonh:16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.
1Jonh:17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.

IN BRIEF

1870 "God has consigned all men to disobedience, that he may have mercy upon all" (⇒ Rom 11:32).

1871 Sin is an utterance, a deed, or a desire contrary to the eternal law (St. Augustine, Faust 22: PL 42, 418). It is an offense against God. It rises up against God in a disobedience contrary to the obedience of Christ.

1872 Sin is an act contrary to reason. It wounds man's nature and injures human solidarity.

1873 The root of all sins lies in man's heart. the kinds and the gravity of sins are determined principally by their objects.

1874 To choose deliberately - that is, both knowing it and willing it - something gravely contrary to the divine law and to the ultimate end of man is to commit a mortal sin. This destroys in us the charity without which eternal beatitude is impossible. Unrepented, it brings eternal death.

1875 Venial sin constitutes a moral disorder that is reparable by charity, which it allows to subsist in us.

1876 The repetition of sins - even venial ones - engenders vices, among which are the capital sins.
