The Rainbow Bar and Grill in Los Angeles, CA..

The name comes from the Rainbow bar and grill in L.A. While Ritchie Blackmore was still in Deep Purple and planning on leaving, he was drinking with the then Elf vocalist Ronnie James Dio, when the question appeared, "What are we going to call our new band?".' Legend has it that they looked up and saw the Rainbow sign, agreed, and a new band was born.

Pretty simple one actually...

Rain - because they were originally only witnessed when it rained.
Bow - because the wide array of colour was uncommon, and such extravagant colouring was only used in accessories to highlight clothing, such as bows and ribbons.
