I have had my male daschund for almost 3 yrs since he was a puppy, he has always been loving and playful. All the sudden for almost 1yr and 1/2 now he has been growling, he looks scared but for no reason, you can call him to you and he will start to growl with this leave me alone low growl no bark he will turn his head from you not towards if that makes a difference. I have a 1yr old daughter who loves to go up to him and say hi but he growls at her too. I am scared he is going to bite her, he has bitten my husband once. He does not liked to be moved from where he is either. I just do not want to get rid of him he is part of the family, I need some adice on how to stop all this growling. Thanks

Check with your vet. There could be something wrong with your dog that is causing pain. No kidding, my friend had a dog that did this for 6 months and actually had a small stick wedged between his toes....no wonder he was growling!! Please check with your vet to rule out any pain!

it sounds like he either thinks he is in control and can do whatever he wants, or he somehow got hurt or injured and caused him to have fear aggression, try showing him you are the boss and that he can't control what you do by growling, if you don't make him come he might get the idea that by growling he dosn't have to do what you tell him to. On the other hand, somthing could have happened that scared him and caused him to resent humans, when you pet him don't come down from over top of him, try going to his level and coming towards him at his level. Don't show fear, this just makes the dog feel insucure and can also cause problems such as growling and aggression. When he growls you can also try give him a quick correction telling him that you do not like the behaviour. Anyway, those are just some of my sugestions, wish you luck <3

Ok, you and your husband have to show him you are in command, not him. When he growls grab his muzzle closed and say, "NO!" If he goes as far as to bite(and it may take this , anyway) simultaneously roll him to his back in a quick motion. Grabbing the skin on the back of the neck is one way to flip a dog. You can do it with a foot if he is on the floor as long as you don't kick him. But you have to have a FAST reaction either way( you won't get bit if you can surprise him). As soon as he is flipped bend down quickly and grab the muzzle followed by the command. Hold him here for several seconds with your hand still covering his muzzle shut. If he is still growling repeat the "NO!" Let him up when he DOESN'T growl. You have to use a firm deep voice for this. Never spank him. This should work. Some dogs respond to "AH!" better than "NO". Use whatever gets his attention best.

its odd that none of the people offering answers here even mentioned this. you have had the dog 3 years. you have a one year old child. dog has acted out for a year and a half. would be willing to bet that when you found out that you were having a baby that the dogs life changed quickly, then once the baby came poor fido was almost forgotten. sounds to me like the dog could be jealous. the injured replies are a better possibility but dont think for a second that dogs dont get jealous. my jack russell will not let another animal near me. she isnt mean to them tho just nudges them away or blocks their path. she is even jelous of my girelfriend at times

I would suggest taking the dog to the vets to make sure he's not injured. Assuming he's not, check out Cesar Milan's "Dog Whisperer" DVDs he is amazing! You will see him work with all kinds of problem behaviour including aggression.
Good luck to you, I hope you can get your sweet puppy back!

something may be wrong with him
maybe he got hurt somehow and he may not want to be touched cause it will hurt every time you pick him up,
or maybe he has gotten distemper, i doubt rabies cause
otherwise he'd be foaming from the mouth
maybe someone was previously mean to him
they may have traumatized him or something

take him to the vet if you can, to try to find out what is wrong with him

hope everything turns out for the best
Good Luck!

If he just started doing this out of the blue then he is probably either sick, injured, or maybe losing his sight. Take him to the vet or give him to someone who can, your daughters saftey comes first.

Oh goodness.
Is he is a different enviornment or new to anything surrounding him?
That could be it. Maybe you should take him to a vet just to make sure nothing is wrong.

he sounds like he might be sick and doesn't want to be touched or moved. or he might be losing his eyesight, so he gets scared and can't tell what's happening. you should see a vet about this, and if that doesn't help, you should see an animal behaviorist or trainer.
