About a month ago i noticed that my 5 month old teacup pomeranian's fur was starting to drastically thin out on both sides of his neck. At first I described it as he was balding but the closer I look, it is almost as if it has just thinned out... a lot... and like there is just very light (his overall coat is black) and fine, thin fur where there was once a thicker coat. I was thinking it may be from scratching since there seemed to be no signs of irritation, rashes or mites but now it seems as if these two thinning spots are creeping onto his back. I am also noticing that there seems to be a faint trail going down his back that looks as if that is beginning to thin out to and I know that he is not scratching (or not nearly enough) to cause this.
Is it possible that he is just shedding his puppy fur? I am not sure how that process goes. i have read elsewhere about hair coming out in clumps when this happens but I have not noticed any clumps falling out or anything of that sort.

I would check with the vet for thyroid problems and cushing's disease. Thyroid issues are common in the breed, and hair loss can be a symptom. Is he drinking a lot of water? Eating normally? Urinating more? The vet will want to know.
Good luck and I hope things turn out ok.

I don't think it's shedding (I could be wrong, but it doesn't sound like it.) Does there look to be any abnormality of the skin in those area's? He's so young for most type of diseases. Maybe a fungal thing like ringworm? Does he have a raised redish ring of the skin in those area's? I would take him to the vet and have him examined. What is his 5 month history?

We noticed a worn-off "saddle" area on our Pom where the hair didn't grow back after summer clip--kind of the same area covered by her harness-leash thing--but she is 10 years old, so we just figured it was old age. If you find out anything, I'm interested to know.

go talk to your vet - it could be a number of things...a skin condition, allergies, etc.
