Start by getting a book on vegetarianism. You need to know a lot about nutrition. The attitude that vegetarianism is simply a matter of giving up meat is misguided. Someone could give up meat and be eating a worse diet than when they ate meat. Your question about eggs shows you realize this. Eggs are considered of higher biological value than any other protein. Milk products and soy are also great protein sources. If you read about it you will discover a veggie recipe you like and so you will be on your way--NOT on some doomed path of renunciation but by attraction to a dish you will enjoy.

Read as much as you can. Online and in books. I gave up meat all at once, fish included. I find it horrific what is done to animals and feel much healthier. Protein and iron are not issues if you eat a balanced diet. My doctor was sure I would be anemic because I am vegetarian, but I was fine. Consult a dietician who has exprerience with vegetarians. I like to make smoothies using silken tofu(no flavor, just adds protein), frozen fruit, bananas, and juice(optional: flaxseed). Mix it all together in a blender for an easy breakfast. Know why you are becoming vegetarian and know that not everyone will support your decision. Don't feel the need to convince and convert everyone. If you eat healthy, the others will see that a vegetarian diet is fine and may follow your lead. Read up so that you can answer questions others have and so that you know how to eat for your health.

You will get enough protein, look at most of India, they have enough protein and there are MANY vegetarians.
I'm curious why you want to become a vegetarian, but since you didn't say then you just stop eating the meat. I personally don't think it's difficult. The hardest part is family and people ALL AROUND you pushing meat, offering meat, bummed that you're not eating it, etc.

To be a healthy vegetarian you need to eat a varied diet, not just fruits and vegetables as you won't get everything you need from these. Add all kinds of nuts and seeds like almonds, cashews, brazils, peptitas, sunflower and flax seed plus more. Proteins and fats are derived from these. Adequate protein can be gained by mixing rice (preferably brown) with beans which will make a complete protein (with all the essential amino acids). Other foods such as soy foods like tofu and tempeh are good protein sources. Yes, eggs too. Keep some dairy in the diet like yoghurt and cheese as these also contain protein. You may want to get your iron levels checked regularly especially if you find yourself getting tired all the time, which is a symptom of anaemia.
As with meals, breakfast shouldn't be difficult to keep vegetarian. A good muesli with yoghurt and fruit is a good option, or any other wholegrain, high fibre cereal or bread. Lunches are relatively easy too - avocado or tahini make a good spread for a sandwhich or ingredient in salads. Dinners can be vegetarian stir frys, soups or salads using veggies, noodles, rice, beans or cous cous. If you're an oven cooker you can make vegetarian lasagne, various baked vegetables, quiche, fritata, pasta or potato bake plus more. The options are endless... Good luck!

You can get enough protein through beans as well.
You should try to give up meat gradually; that might be easier.
