How comfortably? One person? In Manhattan or elsewhere in the city.
Say a 30-something living in Manhattan -- basic one bedroom with doorman/elevator/type building: $3000 average/month so 36K/year
Gym probably $500/year
Groceries $500/month
Entertainment (hard to estimate) $1500/month
Utilities: $50-100/month
Cable TV/Internet: $100/month
Cellphone $50-100/month
Haven't included anything like clothing, miscellaneous, transit, etc....but you get the idea.
All of these can be less but since you said comfortably, I gave liberal estimates.

depends on the part of the city. On average though, apts in the outer boroughs are gonna run you 1500 a month for a 1BR, give or take a few hundred depending on area. Manhattan is a whole other ball game. Studios the size of a closet can exceed 2 grand a month, 5 flights up. All other expenses are off the charts in Manhattan, but more normal in Queens, Brooklyn or the bronx. Its all realtive. What are you going to do? You can live on 30,000 a year in NY, just not on 42St!

Manhattan is probably the only place in the world where a person can make over $100K a year and still be considered "poor". Seriously. Rent alone is average of $2500 a month fora studio apartment.

Depends on your comfort level. For most natives, convenience outweighs comfort. There is no rhyme or reason when it comes to rent in this town.
