I've only been there a few times but it feels far away and NOT part of the city. I don't like the fact that the subway doesn't go there and that made me feel a little trapped. It was like the suburbs but too crowded. The neighborhoods I went to had 'houses' but they were all stuck together like condos. It had a 'trashy' feel to it even though I know it's still very expensive to live there. It's as if it's some weird middle area. You don't get the benefits of living in the city but you don't quite get the space that you'd have in the true suburbs. For that reason, I didn't like it. That's why it reminds me of parts of New Jersey, Long Island or Westchester Co. but at least those places feel a little more connected to the world.

I live in Brooklyn and I KNOW I'm on an island just as I know Manhattan is an island too but Staten Island gave me that weird "I'm trapped on an island' feeling. 'Gross' is a harsh word but it is one of the words that some to mind.

A bit crowded, but the people I found to be extremely friendly. The Staten Island Zoo was great.
