It is all about the test. Even kids in elementary school are now under extreme pressure to do well on the tests mandated by the government. School funding is tied to these tests AND the schools tell the kids. It is all the schools are focused on. The test scores for the schools are posted everywhere. Gone are the days of meeting the student's need. It is now all about getting the student to meet the school's need. "Sorry, but there is no time for music, art, drama or anything else that might actually engage the child." All we ask of you is that they do well on the all important test"

...the parents aren't involved and the teachers have no motivation to teach.

OK... Obviously these are generalizations, but I think these statements are true to a large degree.

Parents are busy people. Whether they are working to make enough money to survive or whether they are independently wealthy and involved in other activities, people are busy. We have learned that schools keep our children all day and we need only arrange for their care during evenings, weekends, and vacations. And with split families, parents are even less involved because they share the transportation and information. More opportunities for gaps in communication.

Teachers are mostly unionized and have guaranteed tenor. Their pay is also set. So, their desire to excel is something that is not driven by external factors as much as internal motivators. Those exist regardless. Yet there is nothing external to drive a teacher on to excellence. In addition, teacher creativity is not rewarded. Also, a teacher has no room to work, given the restrictive nature of discipline and discipline problems within the schools.

These are huge generalizations, but I am trying to keep my usually long posts to a minimum. Even though I am "Home Schooling Mom" I have had children in the public school. First 18 years ago and presently one is taking classes. I myself have worked in the public school and have had some opportunity to see a regression.
