I do not do this often, but if your only source of living is a fixed income, then I would STRONG recommend that you consider living else where. The cost of living in any part of California is so high that the quality of your life will be compromised
To live comfortably within your means, and still enjoy the moderate California weather I would suggest looking for homes / apartments in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, or along the Gulf Coast states. Your income will stretch so much further in those ares.

Since you said you were on a fixed income, I assume it's retirement or social security or something. I doubted that you could get anything in L.A. for that price but after checking 400 craigslist ads It appears that maybe you actually can...in a pretty good area too....but you need to check out the ads and apartments thoroughly. Scam artists have been know to rent apartments that don't exist or that they don't own or have any right to rent....talk to some of the neighbors too....I don't have any info on Palm Springs or San Diego Apartments, but those places are quite a drive from L.A.
There were actually quite a few decent looking places around that price or at least less than $1,000.mo.

Unless you have REALLY low standards, you wont find anything in SD in that price range. Palm Springs / Coachella Valley has decent apartment living in that price range (it'll be an older complex, without modern amenities like a dishwasher and private laundry), but it is indeed the desert, and not at all like the rest of southern california. I live in Palm Springs, and it gets insanely hot here in the summer, regularly breaking 110 to 120F. I moved here from michigan, and even making almost $60k/yr the cost of living will drive me out of this area within a few years. A weekend trip to the beach from here is almost not worth the effort with all the traffic.

There are almost NO "areas" that are bad around San Diego. There ARE a few SMALL areas, but almost everything is relatively safe here in San Diego. $750 is VERY VERY low for this area, you better see it before you pay for it.

Southern California is a bad place to live on a budget. The price of houses and appartments is obscene. There's not a lot you'd be able to afford. If you're determined to live here, I suggest you stay out of downtown LA, though.

For $750 a month you may find mostly bad neighborhoods.

Hmmm depends on where you're going to work. I've lived only 38 miles from my job but it took me 2 1/2 hours to get there sometimes. I hear Compton's nice... lol. j/k A good cheap place is in Twin Peaks 6000 feet u near Lake Arrowhead. The best kept secret in So Cal. Cheap, quiet and cool.

You didn't say where you NEED to be....but if you can choose I would say you can get the best bang for your buck in the outskirts of SD. If you need to be in LA-I would say go East, like Whittier or Downey...definitely more affordable than West LA.
