I've had two lovebirds in the same cage since December. Can I assume they're of the same sex if they haven't layed eggs yet?

No you can't assume anything of the sort.

It could be two females.

it could be two males.

it could be a pair that are imature and are not ready to begin their family.

It could be a pair that are not compatible.

The best thing would be to have the DNA sexed to find out what you have.

If you have lovebirds with pink or a brown nose it is a female. If you have lovebirds that have blue or purple noses they are male.

All Lovebirds don't lay eggs. Many have problems. Or maybe the female bird is still to young and immature to lay eggs. Maybe both the lovebirds are the same sex as you thought. But I know that my method of differentiating lovebirds is all correct.

There are a couple of other possible reasons for that; they may be too young, or they may not have a correct diet to form calcium to make the egg. My lovebirds were together for almost a year before one of them (don't know which one) laid an egg, which was damaged. The only reliable way to figure out the bird's gender is through DNA testing.

You can usually tell their sex by the color of their nose. Something about it being more purple or something. Ask your vet how you can tell.

No, you cannot assume that at all. It could be two males, it could be two immature females, it could be a pair.
