None, unless you have accepted them as a penance.
+ Saints +
Catholics share the belief in the Communion of Saints with many other Christians, including the Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, Episcopal, and Methodist Churches.
The Communion of Saints is the belief where all saints are intimately related in the Body of Christ, a family. When you die and go to heaven, you do not leave this family.
Everyone in heaven or on their way to heaven are saints. You, me, my deceased grandmother, Mary the mother of Jesus, and Mother Teresa.
As part of this family, you may ask your family and friends here on earth to pray for you. Or you may also ask the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Andrew, or your deceased grandmother in heaven to pray for you.
Prayer to saints is communication, not worship.
+ The Blessed Virgin Mary +
In Luke 1:48, Mary prophesied: "From henceforth all generations shall call me blessed."
A question for Christians who take the Bible literally: Do you call Mary "blessed"? If no, why?
The Hail Mary prayer simply recites Bible passages (the Word of God) and asks Mary to pray for us:
Hail Mary Full of grace, the Lord is with you. (These are the words the angel Gabriel said to Mary, a Bible quote.)
Blessed are thou among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. (This is Mary's cousin Elizabeth's greeting, another bible quote.)
Holy Mary, (The angel Gabriel said she was full of grace and Elizabeth said she was blessed.)
Mother of God, (the Bible says Mary is the mother of Jesus Christ, God the Son)
Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. (A simple request to pray for us.)
Amen.
With love in Christ.

If you pray the Holy Rosary it's 50 Hail Marys.
If you just pray the 3 prayers of the Day: (this is o.k., too)
Hail Mary 3X,
Our Father 3X
Glory be to the Father 3X.
We pray to Holy Mary for guidance and protection from the evil one, who despises Her Name.

No Hail Marys are required. The reason for Hail Marys is that it is the words said by Gabriel to Mary during the Annunciation.

Well, the easiest reference is the Holy Rosary. There are 5 decades (or 50 beads) where the Haily Mary is prayed. Note: these are not prayers of worship, but requests for intercession - for help. Ideally we should pray the Rosay, which is actually the prayer of the gospel, daily.
God bless.

Required for what? We say the Hail Mary to honor her and to ask her to pray for us. We honor her because God honored her above all creatures by making her the mother of His Son. In honoring Mary, we are following the example of God Himself. Mary's special privileges were given to her by God, not man.
God bless,
Stanbo

>>why do you do them?<<
We Catholics love to pray Scripture!
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, (Luke 1:28)
Blessed Art Thou amongst women, (Luke 1:42)
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus, (Luke 1:42)
Holy Mary, Mother of God, (Luke 1:43)
Pray for us sinners, now (James 5:16)
and at the hour of our death.
Amen

None, zero are required.
However the prayer that you refer to is straight out of scripture and it is a request for prayer and intercession from Mary. Also the focus of the praying of the Rosary is to meditate on the events in the life of Christ. The focus being on Jesus life and death. We meditate on scripture and life events in Jesus life a long time through the use of this prayer format and I think that we are more in touch especially with the sufferings of Jesus from the garden of Gethsemane to the cross than many people because we have meditated on it over and over in our lives.

no hail mary's are required because peter said there is only one mediator between God and man and that is the man Christ Jesus. None of the saints can mediate for our sins because it takes blood to attone for sin and Jesus is the only one that was pure in His blood that God accepted as a requirement for our sin. Amen! Worthy is The Lamb!

None are "required".
I try to say the rosary every day. I do this as I meditate on the Christ. I offer it up for my family, for the salvation of my husband, my children and extended family members.

They are not required. It is a prayer. We do them for the same reasons you sing any spiritual song or say any prayer
