The Sacred Heart is a religious devotion to Jesus' physical heart.

This devotion is predominantly used in the Roman Catholic Church and represents divine love for humanity. It also stresses the central Christian concept of loving and adoring Jesus. The origin of this devotion in its modern form is derived from a French Catholic nun Marguerite Marie Alacoque, who allegedly learned the devotion from Jesus in visions. Predecessors to the modern devotion existed to some extent in the Middle Ages in various mystical sects.[1]

I remember Scully (a Catholic) was looking at a painting of the Sacred Heart in a Catholic church when she was being stalked by Mulder's neighbor.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus in Catholicism symbolizes the Love and Mercy of Jesus for Mankind, His obedience to His Father and His physical life on earth. The crown of thorns encircling and the light emanating from, His Heart. They are the sufferings he has to endure and the blessing that mankind will get from His Sacrifices. The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus is the symbol of His ultimate sacrifice, giving up His Life for everlasting peace and the deliverance of mankind from sin. His conquest of Death, rising from the dead, put us His beloved people in the light of everlasting life. Amen.

It symbolizes the "faith and steadfastness" of Jesus. When I was a child my brother and me had a plastic "sacred heart" on our bedroom wall. It glowed in the dark...and it scared the hell out of me. No pun intended
