If you use Ubuntu, the installer will ask what partition you want to install it to. You will want repartition the 10GB to include a swap partition. The typical guideline is to make your swap twice the size of your installed RAM. However, I'm using 1GB RAM with a 1GB swap partition without any problem.

As for details of the installation itself, check this page

I can only speak for a Suse installation but if you get a copy of suse:

http://www.novell.com/products/opensuse/?sourceidint=productsmenu_linuxprofessional

insert the CD/DVD and boot from your CD drive you may have to alter the Bios to do this or some computers do it if you press F12 as you boot your machine.

Follow the installation instructions until you get a screen that gives you an installation proposal this should give you three options where to install Suse, in your case and will be something like:

sda/1
sda/2
whole disk

there should be a size of disk beside sda/1 & 2 the 10 gig being the smallest, make sure this is checked, take your time & be certain because if you choose the wrong one you'll wipe your windows partition, then accept the proposal. I would guess most distros installers are the same. The web site above will give detailed instructions on how to install Suse.
Also when it askes where to install the Grub boot loader choose the default option which should be to the MBR. If you are in any doubt choose the default options, I think from memory Suse will choose the smaller partition to install to.

email me if you want any more help.

Figure out what distribution you want to use. If you're new to linux, Ubuntu seems to be the most popular one now. Download the desktop install CD, boot your computer with that CD and use the installer on it. I haven't used the ubuntu installer recently so I can't give you very many details, but you can look on the ubuntu forums if you have other questions.
