The software Limewire is not illegal, downloading it, installing it, there is nothing illegal about it. Downloading the music and distributing it either for profit or just fun can be illegal. Copyrighted material is illegal to distribute. To catch you? well...then can by probably by locking in to your IP address, but can you imagine the millions, probably the billions of people who use it, not only that, they are probably not going to go for the ones that only download a few songs once in a while. Now they might try to track down the ones that downloads hundred maybe thousand of songs first.

First, using anything to download movies, music or software without paying for it is illegal. It has been illegal all this time. It's a violation of international copyright law, and the fine is $750 - $150,000 per song/movie/software downloaded illegally. You can read some basics on it at http://www.chillingeffects.org/piracy/faq.cgi

Limewire itself has been sued for allowing massive criminal activity. the trial goes to court this summer. Articles on it are at http://news.com.com/2100-1025_3-6102509.html and http://www.zeropaid.com/news/7783/Arista+va.+Limewire+lawsuit+gets+a+schedule/ among others.

They can catch you by monitoring traffic and trace you based upon your IP. So far over 20,000 people have been sued by the RIAA for copyright infringement. most settle for around $10,000 or so. You can read some basic info at http://www.riaa.com/news/newsletter/012104_faq.asp
