I will be getting out of high school soon and I have the most amazing boyfriend in the world! We're so in love. I know that many people on here say this and sound immature, but he is everything to me. He is the love of my life, my best friend, a shoulder to cry on and a someone who can always cheer me up. We both believe that it is important to wait till you're married to have sex, so we aren't physically attached, its deeper than that.

The problem is, I am almost positive that I have the opportunity to attend the United States Naval Academy, which only a tenth of applicants are accepted. It is very exciting, but in order to go there I must serve 5 years in the Navy. My goal for the future is to get involved in the federal government, and this would be great experience.

I know that I can't completely base my decision on my boyfriend, but I can't not take it into account. I would love to hear from couples that are in the military or have been. Thanks for your help

A lot of people are going to tell you that you are too young to be in love, and that it means nothing, but lately I have noticed how many people have been together since high school. There are a lot of my friends (now mid to late 30s) who have been together since high school.

5 years in the navy will be hard. You are very mature to be thinking of your relationship. You sound like you have a good head on your shoulders, and you also sound like you have thought this through a lot.

Good luck with talking to people in the navy. My father in law was in the Navy. It was hard on my mother in law. My father in law dropped her off at the hospital when she was in labour, then didn't meet his son for 18 months. There are always these stories in the defence force. It is a hard life. Are you sure it is what you want? There are other ways to get into federal politics. Our local politician studied law, and another is just a mum who got popular over local issues.

You have some tough decisions. Good luck

I have not been in the military, but I faced this same decision when I graduated from High School and wanted to go out of state to college. I didn't want to go because I had a boyfriend and I had to leave him, etc. I decided to go, and we broke up. I was so upset. Looking back, going was the best decision of my life and I believe that if we were meant to be together, he would have stayed in my life for those 5 years in college and been there when I got out. You are young, and in 11 years when YOU look back, you will be so happy you went, and if he is "the one" he will be right beside you happy you got to have that experience! Good luck!!

my friend is a plebe right now, and i will be next year. She and her boyfriend were in the same situation, and she chose to go to the Naval Academy. I'm not saying this is going to work for you, but her boyfriend and her are still together, they had a very similar, non-physical relationship.
I personally, would never give up that opprotunity for a guy, plus I have seen it work, long distance from USNA. Go for it.
GO NAVY!

I don't know why you can't have both! If it is true love, things have a way of working out, even after a five year wait. Why do you think you have to choose one or the other?

You also have to wonder if you don't follow your dreams of your ideal career, will you be happy in your life, or will this be one of your biggest regrets?

I can see that you're smarter than most of the girls who come here. We need more women like you in the Forces. If the opportunity comes up, TAKE IT. It your boyfriend is any kind of man, he'll be able to handle it.
