The answer really depends on what state you live in! First most states have State Police agencies, and some others have State Highway patrol which are two very different forms of policing. The Highway patrol only does highway patrol, traffic accidents and some drug seizures. The State Police do everything that any police agency does from murder to speeding tickets. Both are referred to as State Troopers and require a longer training period.
In NC, anyone can go to the local community college and get the BLET Training, which will allow you to get a local job as a deputy or city police officer.
Being part of the Highway Patrol is much harder not just for women but everyone.

State Troopers work just as hard as regular police officers. The only major difference is that a state trooper has jurisdiction throughout the entire state, whereas a police officer only has jurisdiction in thier local area(city, county, etc..) Typically state troopers make more money than regular police officers too.
As an example, I have a friend that is a state trooper who lived in our city, but had to move to another city after he finished the academy.

State Troopers are generally highway officers. Some also serve as guards on State buildings and as the police force for state grounds. Sheriff's generally work for the county and the "regular" police work in a city. Sheriff's deputies and Police officers do about the same work except that counties are generally more rural, obviously.

State Troopers are enforcing State Laws as well as Federal Law. They primary objectives are the highways and state controlled roadways. Mostly running traffic, working accidents and some drug interdiction.
Local Police and County Sheriff Dept. are enforcing state laws as well as federal laws. Municipal Police also has local ordinances.
They are confined in their jurisdictions and are responding to any criminal activity that occurs in their city.
Neither suppressants the other.
If you think about joining the police force, first you should start out as a City Police or County Deputy.
You gain more experience within this organizations.
Most State Police Dept, require at least one year experience prior to take you into consideration.
Good luck

State Troopers are employees of the state and their jurisdiction can cross city & county lines yet within those cities & counties they might have to defer to the local constabulary. Jurisidiction laws can be complicated, see LA for further details,
Women tend to advance further in big bureacracies, thus many opt for State Police over a smaller local town situation where they might be judged more harshly howver experts assure me that is all changing. Certainly as a State Trooper you will get to travel more within certain regions and that can be a plus.
Peace....

In one word jurisdiction. Other police departments in the state have specific areas determined by there municipality boundaries. The state police cover the state, but mostly in rural areas.
Higher paying departments are with major municipal departments.
