As a healthcare provider I am more concerned about why you needed it and why you think you don't need it now. How long have you taken it? Is it working for you? When I start people on antidepressants I tell them to not consider quitting for at least a year, if not two. All antidepressants should be tapered off of. But doing it with your healthcare provider's help will give the provider a chance to evaluate if quitting is what you need to be doing now.

i used to sell anti-depressants (but not lexapro). but i know enough about most of them. it is true that your doctor should inform you of when to come off the drug, but you can do it yourself too if you feel the time is appropriate.

if you want to stop taking the drug, you have to do it slowly in a 2 week period. for example, if you are taking 20mg right now, you will want to start taking 10 mg for the next 2 weeks and then stop. the point is: come off of it slowly or you will start suffering from headaches, bad moods, or other side effects from coming off the drug cold turkey. weight gain is a big factor in almost all anti-depressants. there are a couple that don't have this side effect as much though, but it depends more so on the patient than the drug. i.e., everything works differently for different people.
