My Norwegian Elkhound ROCKS. I am dead serious, I've had dogs for over 40 years, and never had an Elkhound before this year. He is simply the most incredible companion I have EVER had. He is completely housetrained, rings a bell to go outside, goes to "bed" when I tell him to, and listens very well. Whoever said that Elkhounds were difficult to train .. was full of BUNK! My elkhound follows me where ever I go, is an EXCELLENT guard dog, and is a jovial, sweet natured animal. He never goes out of the yard and his worst offense is digging a hole or two but only very rarely. He loves to go for rides in the car, and is an excellent passenger. One word from me and he lays still on the seat and doesn't move. This dog is the most intellgient animal I have ever seen. One night when I was sick in bed this dog did NOT MOVE from my side or my room. Incredible! He is still only a year old and knows how to control his mouthiness and never hurts me. I LOVE HIM SOOOO MUCH!!!! :)

Elkies ARE cool. My buddy has one and he's a great dog. I have a Husky / Akita and so am biased toward him. One thing though-DOGS ARE THE BEST!!!

Ha ha I am happy for you.. I feel the same way about my mutt he is the most intelligent dog I have ever had the pleasure of caring for. I have read alot about Elkhounds and they are a breed I greatly admire, from what I have read it is not that they are difficult to train it is that they are so extremely intelligent and independant that they have a mind of their own and devise ways to challenge their owners on a daily basis. It is said that they can figure anything out if given enough time and more often than not it is you who is being trained by them..lol Good luck with your wonderful dog, I am so glad you found such a smarty pants dog, they are the best friends in the world. As I said my mutt is incredible to and I wouldnt trade him for the world!

"Experts" speak in generalities. Elkhounds can, as an overall breed, be difficult to train...but that doesn't mean every Elkhound is.

Australian Shepherds are "easy" to train since they love to work so much. However.....my husband's 8 m/o pup is very difficult to train.

I am very glad that you have a dog you are so happy with!

I had one night, about 20 years ago, my husband was in the hospital after emergency surgery, my 2 young children were with my sister. I get home, feed all the critters and fall into bed exhausted. I woke up in the middle of the night with Chessie on one side of me and her daughter, Pokie, on the other in my bed. That was the only time in either dog's long life that they slept in my bed. I think they knew I needed the comfort. Mother & daughter died within weeks of each other.
