Cats are good for someone who's not a home a whole lot. Yes they like human company, but they're really good at being loners. As long as they have food, water, and a clean litterbox they are generally happy. Dogs are generally much more desperate for attention. They do best with a lot of companionship, walks, along with basic necessities like food and water. If you have a busy schedule, a cat is probably better to have. If you're ready for a kid, a dog is the best. I have both and love all four of my babies.

Since we don't know your life style this is a difficult question to answer. Do you travel or work long hours? Cats are much easier to leave for short periods of time because they are very independent. Maybe you work close to home and already do a lot of outdoor things you could include a dog in. Dogs can't be left for more than 4-8 hours at a time and require that you walk them several times a day and also require a lot of training. So, you need to carefully and honestly look at how much time you have to offer a pet and go from there.

It depends a lot on your living situation. And, on the amount of time & energy you want to put into it.

- If you have a small area you should get a cat or a samll dog.
- If you get an indoor only cat, you'll need a plcae for a litter box & it will need to be cleaned often
- Cats are more independant & usually require less attention
- Dogs usually require more baths, walking & playing (do you have the time)
- Cats can be left at home for a few days if you need to leave town (w/ a litter box & plenty of food & water)
- Dogs shouldn't be left alone for longer periods of time
- Cats aren't always safe around babies (they smell the milk on thier breath & can suffocate them getting into thier face)
- Cats are easy to housebreak

There are pros & cons to each. You'll just have to decide which is best for you personally! Good Luck!

It depends on what you have time for. If you have lots of time to take walks and go to dog parks and even an occasional trip to Petsmart then a dog would be a great pet for you. If your not home all the time and you want a pet that is a little bit more independant then a cat is probably a better pet for you. Either way you need to devote love and attention to them both. If your not willing to do that then maybe you just need a goldfish.

If someone is at home all the time and has the time to properly train an animal, get a dog
If you are always on the go and don't mind having your belt attacked after you come home, get a cat.
I had a dog, but then started working and I just wasn't home enough. I came home to poop and pillows torn up and all over the floor.
I now have 2 cats and they are both odd kitties. I don't have to really do anything but feed and brush them. They know how to use the toilet, so no litter. All I need to do is flush it for them.

This really depends on your life style....a cat is more independent and can get along better if left inside for long periods of time...such as while you are at work and no-one is home. A cat can use a litter box....a dog...well your floor LOL. Also a dog is a more social companion....by that I mean they need and want more human time....a cat...well when they want you...they will let you know LOL

They are extraordinarily different. Cats are just happy being themselves in your home. They are pretty much are the boss and will decide when to be with you and when not to. They do best if we honor that. They like being petted and sitting on your chest purring, for the most part. They are low maintenance and beautiful. Dogs are your pal, interacting with you and so happy to see you and be with you. But they need a commitment of training, exercise, playing, and of course love (according to The Dog Trainer. They are such fun, wonderful, loving, your best friend. but need attention and a caring, responsible home. Or they can be difficult, barking, biting, peeing in wrong places, etc.

Cats are much more independant - you don't walk them-or have to train them asas much as a dog - unless you want to ??If you get a cat keep it in doors though - unless you want a missing pet & thats not fun :(

Dogs are great -I'm a huge dog fan - butthey require much more time attenting & devotion ....and if you can't devote a large ammount of the day to one maybe u should stick with a cat ......

Ask friends about their pets maybeyou can lookafter them for a day& kind of test ride pet ownership ?

It all depends. Dogs prefer a large background with space to run around, constant stimulation and regular walks. Cats do not need this. However, you can't teach a cat tricks AS EASILY (it can be done, I managed to get my cat to "come" once). The two animals are equally affectionate, as it all depends on the animal in particular.
Go to a shelter and see if you find one you like. Good luck!

If you are out most of the day, I would chose the cat. Cats are independent and don't pine if you're away. If you are home most of the day and have time, pick the dog. Dog's will love and trust you if you show them attention and love. Some dogs will even die for you. Good luck!
