This is a long way for a gnat to fly.

Or am I being passed on to other groups of gnats so that it is never the same gnat gnatting at my head.

I'm move to think of how, though waves move longitudinally through the water, the particles of water within a given wave just move up and down and impart momentum to other particles.

Well, it is a combination of both. The gnat can fly many miles further than a human can travel. This means that you could nave been annoyed by the same gnat the entire way of your hike. How ever a gnat is attracted by the moisture of your sweat. They were looking for fungus. seeing as your perspiration was new, you probably didn't have any for them to eat. So as one or more gnats became "bored" looking for food new ones sensed your presence and started to search for nourishment on your body.

Gnats are atracted to you from your sweat. At least, that is my understanding of it. There are several gnats that fly around along the place you hike, I suppose they "trade off" at a certain distance. As for your comment about the waves of the water, it is amazing to watch that go on. Good thoughts. Take care.

I think the gnats are attracted to you, because of your warmth of your body and/or sweat. They are trying to cuddle with ya...lol. This is what I've heard.
