next day he started having bloody bowel movements, and his wife describes it as having a heavy period. My older brother brother was diagnosed with having colon cancer and and is not doing very well. has anyone had this kind of symptoms? He has been to the dr and the dr just prescribed something for it, but I find it strange that he was never recommended to go to a specialist that deals with this sort of thing.

Your brother needs to get a second opinion. Colon cancer is hereditary so if your older brother has it and your twin has these scary symptoms, your twin needs to get a colonoscopy and be very careful and diligent! Good luck!

I am really sorry about what your family is going through. I'm not a doctor, and I can't say for sure, but.......Has your twin been checked for colon cancer? Did he tell his doctor his brother has been diagnosed with it? With a sibling having it, the odds are high he could have it, too. My husband was diagnosed with rectal cancer in 2005. His symptom was blood in his stools. His dad had had it as well, and we later found out his grandmother had it later in life. Had we known those genetics earlier, we could have made sure he got checked early. They would have found a polyp or two, removed them, and gone on, and he wouldn't have had to go through 3 surgeries. I think your twin probably needs to go have a colonoscopy (sp?) ASAP, and I think you should, too. If they determine it is genetic, their children need to start getting checked at an age that is about 10 years less than when their parent was diagnosed.

It probably has nothing to do with the bacon.
If it's bright red blood, it could be a hemorrhoid that has broken open but if colon cancer or any other type of colon diseases run in the family, he needs to have it checked out by a doctor who should order a colonoscopy.

if you have a family history of cancer and having bloody bowel movements -- why would you ask someone on yahoo and not just find a different doctor?

he should go to a real doctor (or at least a different one) if his first doc didn't tell him everything.

I recommend a higher fiber diet that includes ground flax and psyllium. 2 tblspoons of psyllium in a half cup of milk with cinnamon is yummier than maltomeal. he can make pancakes or waffles out of ground flax seed.
