Personally I'd go Beagle. Mine is a sweet boy, six years old. I find the Beagles to be more laid-back, Lab's are sweet, but they are very high-strung. It depends on what you like.

Beagles & labs are VERY different breeds ... Ones a working dog (lab)it needs ALOT on evercise - reccomened 6 miles walk a day ..

Beagles are very sweet dogs (hounds) they bark/ bay alot - some more than others but none the less expect baying ... and most are not the Lab working aptude ( eg you say " come " the lab will be sitting at your feet in seconds while the beagle will be sniffing the ground & will slowly eventually lumber over to you when it feelsup to it.
So if your wanting a more "remote controlled " obedience dog that requires more exercise go for the lab they have great personalities & always want to please

If you want a smaller dog who thinks big & will sound the alarm - think Beagle

Why not go to the city pound there are LOTS of pure & mixed breed dogs there that are amazing & waiting for a home !! Or contact Breed rescues they have puppies & older dogs all in need of a home & usually very reasonably priced !

Sorry about your beagle.

I've heard that some beagles can be smelly and tend to bark a lot. I have a lab that's 5 and she is WILD--like a puppy! She can run and run and never gets worn out. It you get a lab, they need lots of excercise ofr YEARS! but both dogs have great personalities and both are extremely cute.

I have no experience with beagles, but labs are super dogs. When my husband and I have a big yard, I plan to own two or three. They are overall, in MY opinion the best family pet. GREAT companions.

Just my opinion. Go with the beagle. Just a personal preference.

beagles are sweet, I got one for my son, but it ran off when it was a pup, they like to follow their nose, that sometimes gets them lost. I got the best dog I have ever had in my life at the shelter, he was 1 when I got him about 6mos ago, hes a Australian Shepperd mix, with one Blue eye and one brown. His name is Blue, and he makes me cry because hes so grateful and loving. A lab stays hyper for at least 4 yrs, can be overwhelming if you have small children, but they are sweet dogs. I love the chocolate ones. I grew up with a golden retriever named Taffy, sweetest dog ever, and I also had a yellow lab when I was a girl, named Cricket, I loved those dogs. I also have a yorkie poo now, hes so easy to love, but hard to house-train. He will go to the cat box. He likes to push the big dog around. I personally feel closer to the bigger dogs, and I have trouble bonding with dogs that keep their nose to the ground too much, Blue looks into my eyes a lot. Hes so funny, the teenagers that see him say he looks like Marilyn Manson. I told my husband hes the boyfriend I always wanted, hes crazy jealous when my husband tries to hug me, he just starts winning.

My experience with beagles is that females are really lazy and the males are REALLY active. I don't know if this helps any but I thought I would throw in my two cents.

I'm sorry about the loss of your Beagle.

I would go with a Labrador from a reputable breeder. Unless your uncle is a registered and reputable breeder who screens all of his dogs of hereditary diseases (hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and PRA), don't buy a dog from him.
