As a healthcare provider I can tell you that constipation is not isolated to one sex. It is equally distributed I'm sure. I usually encourage dietary changes with an increase in fruit and fiber. Fiber supplements with a full glass of liquid is also a good start. There are also stool softners (like Colace) which are effective and have little side effects. Laxatives are OK if used only on occasion, and not on a regular basis. For constipation that seems to be long term and difficult to treat by the usual methods there is a new medication called Amitiza which is effective and safe. It's taken twice a day with food..and this would be on a regular basis. It is available only by prescription

yes..both have constipation

20-35 grams of dietary fiber daily. You can easily get the fiber from fruits, vegetables and whole grains. If you think it is excessive, you need not worry. A small apple will provide you with 3 grams of fiber, ½ cup of beans contain 5 grams of fiber and a bowl of bran cereal has 13 grams of fiber. Eating prunes, dried beans, raisins, popcorn, figs, pears, oatmeal and nuts will easily treat constipation without having to resort to expensive medicines. Start on these high fiber foods slowly. Eating too much too soon can cause gas.

Drink 6-8 8 ounce glasses of water daily. It is the best liquid to prevent constipation and maintain general health.

Regular exercise is an excellent home remedy to treat constipation. Walking is one of the right exercises to prevent and cure constipation.

I'm a woman and very regular, but I suppose if I wasn't regular, I would take a gentle laxative like Dulcolax or something.
