Being an extreme procrastinator wouldn't help, but shouldn't hinder you once you start to hear some nice results for your hard efforts.
And to begin with like most good things and remembering that we are our own worst critics, it'gonna take a little time.
If you can afford it, as I could at the time, find yourself a noted person to give you private tuition or altrnately a friend or last but not least videos and books can tuit you..
Buy a metronome, which is a thing that marks time for you by regularly recurring annoying (kidding) clicks and you can adjust the intervals as you wish. Basically it helps you keep your rythm in time.
So ask your tutor to teach you and learn a few of the most common chords first.
Practice 2 of them together over & over & now without looking. Then 3 of them together.
Then, start finger picking just with the right hand, over & over then with out looking until it is second nature to you. (that typing will never be for me!
Now here comes the magestic part of all,
Then put some chords together with your finger picking, and its all smooth sailing from there!
Put in at least half hour each day with no exceptions. (I'd be a hard task master wouldn't I)
If your fingertips get sore, put dip them in metho a couple of times a day. And I never told you that! They will harden up!
If you get RSI, -once again kidding! ~smile~
Zach, its really worth the effort, go for it!
Now with the advice I've given you & I almost got teary, unfortunately I had an accident involving my left hand, so now I don't play!
So go learn and play one for me matey!

First of i would like to say that i have never taken lessons, but i would highly reccommend them.
Ive seen some peopel get really good really fast that way, and its the best way to learn.

I would also pick a song that is a little out of your ability to play, and work on it daily until you can play along with the cd/mp3.

look up excersizes on the internet, and work on bad habits you notice yourself continually doing.

Dont Give up!
