Well if you mean no reason then yes they can. Just keep going once and see what happens.

How do you know there is no reason? Most of the time people commit a traffic violation it's by mistake not knowingly. Do you know all the traffic laws out there. For example how many times have you made a right turn and not pulled into the nearest lane. How many times do you signal 100 feet prior to your turn, How many times do you fail to stop at the designated point, How many times while driving do you get out of your car to walk around to make sure you license plate light is still working and not burned out. There are plenty of reasons to stop a vehicle that I'm sure your not even aware of. It's not all speeding, running red lights, expired registration.

Here is another example. The corner store just had a beer theft. The clerk advised that the offender was a white male and drove off in a blue ford mustang. I'm responding to the area and see a blue ford mustang operated by a white male. I check him out and determine this is not the right vehicle. It was just a coincidence that there were two vehicles matching the clerks discription that night. Happens all the time.

How about this. There may be a hazard up ahead that just came out on the police radio and they have not had time to block off the road. So the officer responding to the soon to be road block lights you up to save you from driving into a chemical spill. Do you still want to keep going? After all the Officer has no reson to stop you. Your so smart you were obeying all the traffic laws. There can be no reason to stop you. Except maybe to save your life!!!!

Yes you will need to pull over for a marked car with its over head lights on. I assure you there will be a reason, this may or may not be given to you, that is up to the officer and your attitude may be a factor in a officers judgment. After making contact with the driver and asking for license, registration and insurance papers, I will tell them if its for a traffic violation, but if its for another reason I may wait.

A lot of people call in suspicious vehicles, on these I may have no other reason for pulling a car over other than the type of vehicle matches that which was described.

If in the USA, yes you must pull over when it is safe to do so.

Failure to stop at the command of a police officer could get you in a real pickle...6 points and loss of driver's license in some states. A felony in other states.

Plus, how do YOU know it is for no reason?

First of all, the police never pull anyone over for no reason. There is always a reason. No one can drive more than a few miles without violating a traffic law.

For example, driving too fast, failure to signal, following to close, seatbelt violations, weaving, rolling stops, crossing a solid line, etc.

Yes, you must stop or else you will be violating another traffic law.

What did you do wrong.

Some of the answers are correct but misleading due to a lack of detail. First off, you're not going to know why they are stopping you until you stop. That being said, you would be well advised to stop. Otherwise, you'll get your *** in a wringer.

As for stopping in a well lighted or populated area, you should find the nearest well lighted and populated area. Once you explain to the officer why you failed to pull to the right immediately, he will most likely agree with your decision and there will be no repercussions. You might point out that it is safer for you AND him/her.

Yes you have to stop. Otherwise how could you know that they have no reason to stop you?

Being pulled over without a reason (or probable cause) can help you to get your case thrown out later, but you certainly have to stop when a police officer tells you to.

try it and let us know how it turns out. Of course you have to stop. First cops don't pull people over for no reason. Secondly, if you don't stop its called felony evasion. If you have nothing to hide you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

First of all there is no such traffic stop "for no reason"
If you have an official police vehicle behind you with flashing lights, you should pull over immediately or you'll be charged with Evading. Much, much serious offense then a traffic ticket.

I would highly recommend you stop. If you don't it is resisting arrest. They will think you have something to hide like drugs.

If you pull over and are polite and respectful to them sometimes you'll find that they want to advise you of a burned out brake light or that you should have stopped completely. They often will let you off with a warnining. Be smart with them and you'll pay.

Yes, first they always have a reason to stop you if they turn thier lights on to pull you over. You may not know what it is, but they can.

If you don't stop that is an additional charge they will change you with, after they force you to stop.
