Did the shell have a hit mark in the primer? If not it may well be broken.
Have you ever shot it in the past?
If not it may well be broken or have parts missing.
Was it a 12 gauge shell, might sound silly but I have had people bring in a shot gun for repairs and now I had them bring in any shells they fired or tried to fire in the weapon.
You would not believe how many 16 and 20 gauge shell have been loaded in a 12 gauge by mistake.
And a 16 or 20 gauge will be out of reach of the 12 gauge firing pin.
If the ammo was of the right gauge and the primer did not have a solid hit then it is the weapon.
But again if the primer was hit and did nor fire then the shell was defective.
Then just try some new ammo.
If the weapon still fails to work, it time to take it to a gunsmith and let them fix it.
That my opinion.

I recommend taking it down to a gunsmith and having them check it out. It may be the firing pin and it may also be that your whole mechanism is out of whack. It could be something simple that you may have forgotten to do, but it also could be serious. Best bet is to take it into a gunsmith and NOT take it apart yourself. Please dont make the mistake of ruining a perfectly good shotgun.

Is the firing pin making contact with the shell. Sounds like the pin spring could be weak or the pin could be worn down. Sounds like you need a good gun smith.

Take it to a qualified gunsmith. More important ask the gunsmith to tell you where a local gun club is located and read some books about shooting basics. Contact the NRA for gun clubs in your area. Please learn good, safe shooting skills and gun handling first.
I apologize if I am jumping to conclusions but by your post you don't sound very experienced with firearms. If you are starting out in the shooting sports, welcome. But please get proper instruction, we do not need another gun accident as an excuse for lame brain politicians to pass more useless gun laws.

If you don't know anything about your gun, unload it, lock the action open and take it to a gunsmith to look over.
Next time provide more information. You need to specify if it worked before, is it new, any previous problems, etc. We can't read your mind.

If you are as stupid as your spelling is, you shouldn't be messing around with firearms.
