Our 2 and 4 year-old dogs bark, run around in excitement, and jump up on peope when they come to visit. We took this hint from a friend and rolled up a newspaper and swatted them softly with it a few time while telling them "NO". It didn't take long for them to learn not to jump and bark, however, they still run in circles around the company. If they begin to forget this lesson, all we have to do now is to hit our own leg (they don't like the sound) and they remember their training.

Training can work, but what you need to do is probably play with your dog for a while and then have someone it doesn't know come by and if he barks like he means it, he's probably thinking he's protecting you. Every time he barks, punish him, nothing big, maybe a squirt of water, or a gentle swat on the rump or nose.

HOpe this helps!

I found that a squirt gun is the best tool for training dogs and cats. The startle of the spraying water is not harmfull, not fear causing and distracting to the point that the animal will forget the fear of the person it is barking at. Just go buy a two dollar squirt pistol from a walgreens or someplace like that.

the same way that you would teach a puppy, but it may take a longer time forthe dog to learn to break out of the habits it has formed.

if your dog is malicious
