like these kind of problems. (a +4y)+(3-2y)= . so whats the point of the letters they only throw a person off if they dont know the purpose of the letters.

Because the letter is a number that we do not ... but is real.. if you see the letter "y" 1 or more times at the same problem, always has the same value at that problem, Letter are unknown number that are reals ....good luck

Also,

it is important to use letters because, they stand for different numbers in differeent situations. At any one time all letters x or y or whatever stand for their own thing throughout the problem, but in another situation they may stand for another number.

It gets much easier after you use them for a while.

The letters in alegebra are used to represent unknown numbers.

I'm assuming that you are just beginning algebra becasue you say that the letters throw you off. It gets easier to deal with letters in mathmatical problems once you've practiced them more.

Well, we can't use numbers--numbers already mean whatever number we'd use. So, we use letters to stand for "unknown numbers." I guess we could use curliques, or amphersands or question marks--but letters are easier to make.

to stand fo the number that you are trying to find out, we can't just use.. numbers, b/c that would confuse you even more
and that's the point of algebra... EQUATIONS
