The Hemingway cat is not a breed, it is simply a mutation that is carried in the genes of the cat population on his estate. But it exists in plain household pets all over America, and in a few purebreeds like the Maine Coon.

This trait is called being a polydactyl, or having an extra digit. In some extreme case, cats virtually have two sets of toes on each foot, usually the back feet, making eight toes each.

To my knowledge, the cats that live/lived on the estate are not sold. They would not be valuable for any other reason than the curiosity of owning a cat descended from cats that Hemmingway fed, as his cats were pretty much a wild, feral population that roamed his property.

If you really want a cat with the extra toes, check out the local shelters, or the shelters that list pets in your are on petfinder.com

How would you know that this cat is a Hemingway cat? I have been to Key West and seen his ancestor cats and was told they keep some cats at another location that are polydactyl breed more cats for Hemingway's estate, but as a Vet tech, I have seen many polydactyl cats and they were rescue kitties, you would just have to be approved by the rescue league and pay there adoption fee. These cats are not rare. I hope this answers your question.

Probably not worth a fortune. There are alot of cats with 6 toes. Hemmingway cats are just called that because of the Hemmingway property and the 6 toed cat trait that is on that property, but they run around stray, so I can't imagine they would be worth a whole lot.

The "Hemingway cat" is not a breed in itself. It is a nickname for polydactyl cats (cats with extra digits on their feet) stemming from the overabundance of them in Key West (Florida), reportedly descendants of cats belonging to the famous author. This anomaly is due in that region to the rampant inbreeding of the cats.
To a breeder, polydactyl cats are worthless. The extra digit is considered a genetic flaw.
Just enjoy him for the loving pet that he is.

Likely you could find one in the shelter, or even someone with a litter in the paper with one or two for
next to nothing. It isnt' a breed of cat, it's a genetic defect.

The cat is a polydactyl. It's not a breed although some maine coons can be polydactyls. It is a genetic mutation, not a rare breed.

Six toed cats are common, I used to have one myself. I don't think there is any extra charge for one as they are certainly not rare. Just check out a local shelter until you find one you want.
