For some, there comes a time in their life when they look around and realize on a deep level that many people believe in many things and not all of those things can be right (since some are mutually exclusive).
So how does a person decide which ideas are ideas to keep and which ideas are ideas to discard. Since a person's beliefs have an effect on what they do and how they live their lives, a person is, then, responsible for those beliefs.
There is also the realization that if other people believe things that are wrong, that it might be true that you yourself might believe something that's wrong. How could you tell? What criteria could you apply to tell good beliefs from bad ones?
Some choose evidence and reason as the basis for determining what is real. They embrace science and what it tells us about the universe.
Some choose a mixture, they continue to believe in the God of their parents for matters spiritual and science for matters practical.
Some choose Biblical literalism deciding that the pure path is to believe as much of the Bible as they can.

If someone has not achieved pure love of God then in frustration they may turn to atheism.
However, you are talking from judeochristian perspective. They had false gods in the early days fo jewish and Christian religious beliefs.
People have trouble understanding the existence of anything eternal and this includes eternal love, the eternal soul and the Supreme Being. Some people instead, turn to what they can perceive without trouble, and that is the material enjoyments. And so the become convinced the only purpose of existence is pursuit of material enjoyment.
I live in an international city. One must be very selfrealized not to be tempted by the immorality and other temptations available in areas like this. So we have to achieve that state of trance, that state of enlightenment, when if we encounter any kind of temptation we are not moved away from our love of God.

There is no evidence of the existence of God. The bible was a book written by man, faith is a feeling just like love and hate, the wind is not a valid argument because it can be explained by very simple science.
That is why people are Atheists. And even if that wasn't enough, all of the violence and hate that is spread around the world by religious people should surely convince you that God does not exist. Plus what sort of God would kill innocent children... Oh, that's right - it's the work of the Devil.
And I haven't even had to mention evolution yet.

In asking this question, with references to the bible, you
are negating the right of people to have freedom of
religion...and there are many to whom the bible has no
significance. Atheism may challenge the existence of
a God...especially one with a human consciousness, but
it doesn't necessarily mean the lack of sprituality which
can be found in human kindness, family values, The Golden
Rule (which focuses on a reality based society), appreciation
of the Earth exactly as it is, and love, compassion and
open mindedness, including respect for another's personal
beliefs and values. If this isn't "Godliness", I don't know
what is. Expand your horizons my friend to include all.

How did you learn this? Is it because you have been taught that this is true since you were a child, and were unable to question it? Was your belief continually reinforced with promises of eternal reward if you believe, and promises of eternal punishment if you doubt?
How would you tell if your beliefs were actually true, or just the result of indoctrination?

The loss of a loved one would do it. Why do so many awful people need to be excuted for their crimes, yet so many good people die of disease or accidents? Wait until a loss like that happens to you... We'll truly see just how much faith you have. If God created all life, then God created pathogens which cause disease, he created some humans with missing p53 genes which would result in the development of cancer, yet people call him a god of love and compassion? If the story about Jesus is true, I'm sorry that they didn't crucify him more harshly.

Oh my gosh... I am not atheist but... just learn to accept other people .... atheists honestly do not care about eternal doom.... all they want to do is live out their lives not having to be controlled under the rules of some God, which there is no evidence of His existence to them, they want to find their own spirituality from within... so all of the things you are saying does not apply to what they believe. How would you feel if someone asked you what caused you to be Christian?

I don't understand why EVERYONE isn't an atheist.
All modern religions sound exactly like ancient Greek and Egyptian mythology to us.
I am an atheist because I managed to escape indoctrination and instead examined the world and draw my own conclusions. My conclusion was that there is absolutely nothing supernatural about the world we are living in. I cannot live an existence based on faith.

Being atheist is kinda sad. When they die, what happens? They're all dressed up with nowhere to go. I'm not ridiculing, but I find it a little sad that for them, everything ends when they die, and have no hope for anything beyond that.
I'm a Christian but I don't force my beliefs on atheists. I just silently pray for them.
By the way, I know you guys don't believe in the devil, but he's real too. And -- geewhiz -- he believes in God too!
