Best alternative is a little good old fashion elbow grease. There are bits that you can purchase at any hardware store that will fit in a drill, router, zip tool that will remove enough grout from the joints that will allow you to apply new layer of grout that will have a more preferable color.:)

Painting Grout

There are a few solutions available to you:

1. Buy the white-out for grout that you'll find specifically in hardware stores (Home Depot has it). Use this on the grout and your grout will be white again.

2. Use comet and a toothbrush and elbow grease.... lots of work and not my favorite choice.

3. Grout is porous and CAN be painted. Use ordinary latex paint for interiors. Which means you can do it any color you want. But because it's porous, you need to let the paint dry. But wipe it off the ceramic tile as you paint. I also suggest that once the paint has completely cured (at least 30 days), you seal it with a clear, water-based satin sealer. This way, you won't have to paint it again and it won't get dirty and dingy. And what's really cool is that you can get the paint in basically any color. You do need to let it cure for the 30 days tho... otherwise, it may stay damp inside the sealer and sooner or later, it will crumblefrom the inside out and the tiles will begin to crack. Painting grout is my favorite choice and we do it all the time for clients.... and I've done it once in my home.... didn't need to do it a 2nd time as I sealed it properly!

Grout won't hold paint very well. You will have a mess in two or three wees.
If your grout looks grungy and should be white, get an old toothbrush and some water and bleach ( maybe 1/2 and 1/2). Put on some rubber gloves and eye protection and scrub away. It works great, (Also kills black mildew.) Love you, Sammy

if your grout is white, i had the same problem depending on the color of your tile, there is a polyblend non sanded grout, it comes in many colors, just pick one that compliments your tile, before you start just sand your old grout a little, there is also a pigment which can be added to regular white grout, this way you have a bigger choice, good luck
