When I was a kid, I had cystic acne (really bad stuff!!). I took varied forms of antibiotics, usually eurythromicin. It took a long while for it to go away, but it did.

I also took accutane at one point. It worked for my acne, but the side effects were serious dehydration. I had to pee about 6 times a day, which, of course, caused problems at school :)

Treatment varies from patient to patient, so your dermatologist will be best to treat.

By the way, the over-the-counter treatments work, usually for maintaining clean skin, once it is under control.

It is important to clean not only your face but your whole body on regular base. I have a very good experience with the Mary Kay products. I now use the total line to take good care of not only my face, but my entire body.

First you use the Time Wise 3-in-1 Cleanser (choose your skin type normal/dry -combination/oily) to clean your face. I advice you to cleanse your face at least 3 times a day.

After cleansing your face, use the Acne Treatment Gel. You will see that the acne will disappear within 3 or 4 days.

Feed and protect your face with the Time Wise Day Solution Sunscreen SPF25.

Use the Time Wise Microdermabrasion set 2 times a week to scrub your face so that the dead cells will be gone.

I just want to notice that the Time Wise line also reduces wrinkles.

For your body you can use the Mary Kay 2-in-1 body wash & shave to cleanse your whole body.

After cleansing the body, use the same Acne Treatment Gel as I mentioned before where needed.

At last use the Mary Kay hydrating lotion for moisturizing the skin and leaves it smooth and soft.

You can buy the products at the website of a representative of May Kay where you can get 25% discount.

Success and enjoy your beautiful skin as it will becomes smooth and soft.

I truly empathize! i battled with acne during most of my 20's and it is just starting settle down at age 34. Acne is caused for many because of hormonal imbalances. You can try antibiotics with your dermatologist, but be aware that there are often side effects such as discoloration of teeth. Retin A may be a good solution but you want to be cautious with the sun. Best bet, is that you may need to try a few different things with your dermatologist to figure out what works best for you. Don't give up! It just takes a little trial and error, and insist that your Dr. work with you to find the best option. Sometimes a Dr. will want to shrug your problem off if you do not hit the right treatment right away.

You could try different products that contain salicylic acid (I think Neutrogena has a bunch of this stuff - facial wash etc) or benzoyl peroxide. I would advise against using both at the same time, however, as your skin could react adversely to it.

Try using one product at a time. And keep in mind that 2.5% benzoyl peroxide (BP) has the same effect against acne as 10% BP. 10% BP will only overly-dry your skin.

There is a web site that sells BP gel that has worked for me when I was in high school, and it apparently helped a lot of people too. It's much cheaper than Proactiv as well.

I suggest you just try to be patient, but here are a few at-home attempts...

Baking soda based toothpaste helps dry pimples and helps get rid of blackheads WAY more easily.

My doctor always recommends Clearisil face wash, but Neutrogena is also good if clearasil doesn't work.

I've also read thatif you put a lemon dabbed in sugr on your face and scrub it in, avoiding your eyes, before you shower it will help get rid of blackheads.(Your face may be a bit red so don't do this RIGHT before you go out...)

As for the scars another user for a similar topic suggest a mask of oatmeal and milk that will help rid of oils, therefore allowing for healing.

When you pop pimples or white headsuse two Q-Tips and immediatley after apply a bit of acne medice and whatever that creme/gel stuff you put on cuts is called. (I've also heard rubbing alcohol suggested, but I've never tried it.

It's been sugested that Green Tea helps prevent acne. "(Green Tea with Honeysuckle is often known as 'Pimple Tea' in many Chinatowns)"

Homemade Facial Mask:

Normal, combination skin, oily and blemished skin
Mix one egg white, 1/2 cup cooked instant oatmeal, a teaspoon olive oil and a few drops of lemon juice until smooth. Spread on your face and neck, leave on for 15 – 30 minutes then rinse with lukewarm water.

Dry skin
Mix one egg yolk, one teaspoon honey and a teaspoon olive oil and some vitamin E oil. Spread over your face and neck, leave on for 15 – 30 minutes then rinse with lukewarm water.

Dry and spotted skin
Mix dry oatmeal (you may grind it in a blender), honey and plain yogurt to make a paste. Spread it over your face and neck, leave on 15 – 30 minutes then rinse with lukewarm water.

Gentle Facial Cleanser:
The Ingredients The Instructions
1/2 cup oatmeal or cornmeal
plain yogurt (add enough yogurt to form a paste)
For a gentle facial cleanser mix ingredients, smooth over entire face avoiding eye area. Wash off with warm water.

Proactiv and Chemical face peels work well...Or you could try something called the Zeno..its a bit pricy but it really works! And washing you're face with warm water also helps cause it opens up the pores in your face.

This lady that worked in cosmetics said if you heat up a curling iron unplug it and let it sit for 2-3 min it will get to a lukewarm temp and if u leave it on pimples the heat reacts with the skin in someway and makes the pimple go away faster...I don't know I didn't really catch what she said...and it sounds a bit weird to do that...but she says she does it and her skin is clear.... So -shrug- it may work.

And also another thing I've heard is toothpaste works on pimples to help them dry up fast and to make them go away...

don't use anything over the counter. NONE of that **** works. instead, when you go to your regular checkup at the doctors next time, ask for a prescription for a strong acne cream. he'll give you one and it'll work like hell.
