ages 8 and 5 ... I have not seen them in a LONG time and do not know what they like ... any ideas?

Give them a set of 2 Lazer Tag Team Ops Guns. They will love them! That's what I got my nephews for Christmas and Unle & Auntie were the greatest =)
You can find them online fairly cheap. I just sold a pair of them for $40 on ebay. They will need 2 though or it isn't fun.

The personalized book idea is really neat. I would think that remote control car would be neat for the 8 year old, the 5 year old would probably think so too.
Coloring books for the 5 year old would be a good idea.
They'll be thrilled that you even thought to get them anything - because most kids that age like to get attention.

How about a personalized book? Kids love to hear their name in the storyline. Go to this website http://www.tlc-expressions.com They have lots of titles like Batman, Spider-Man, Ballerina Princess, Dinosaur Land, Sesame Street, Scooby-Doo, Looney Tunes, Sports titles and so many more. Get the 8 year-old a nintendo ds (because my brother is almost 9 and he loves it)
Get the 5 year old a small motorized car (i liked my barbie one when i was 5)

Spider man i have nephews who are the same age and they love spider man and batman. anything superheros. but like toy guns, trucks, cars and motorcycles. candy.

Lego's. there are some REALLY neat ones on the market now... there are some my son is particularly fond of... they are pirate ships: one is even from the Pirates of the Caribbean (the black pearl). they range in price from $10.00 to $40.00.
