I've been going 2 to 3 months between periods the past couple of years. My last period was late December. I had unprotected sex in late January. I took a pregnancy test in late February - for my own peace of mind - and it was negative. Now, late March, I've been feeling nauseous, my breasts feel larger, my nipples are sore. Can these be further symptoms of menopause and hormonal changes - or could I be pregnant?

By the way, the symptoms just started this past week.

For those who wanted more information: I am 46, have had irregular periods the last 2 to 3 years, and the dr. said the irregular periods were due to perimenopause. After having a negative pregnancy test in February, I didn't think any more about the possiblity of pregnancy until I started feeling nauseous and noticed my sore breasts.

Ok - I took another pregnancy test this morning and it is also negative. I haven't had sex since that one time in late January - so I'm definitely leaning toward this being further symptoms of menopause. Thank you for all your help!

You did not state your age and I am not a doctor, so I can not be of any certainty. I do know that menopause and pregnancy both have the types of symptoms you mentioned. Your best bet is to go to your gynecologist. He/she will know best and can give you the tests you need to determine what is causing these changes.

While I would never rule out pregnancy in this situation. I would have to disagree with a lot of the answers. The feeling of engorged breast and soreness along with irregular periods can be sign of menopause, due to the hormonal change. Menopause effects EVERY WOMAN DIFFERENTLY. There have been many woman in the same situation and it turned up they were pregnant, but more times than not they were starting the final stages of menopause. Most OB/GYN's will not put you on hormone therapy till your periods have stopped for six months. However, some will put you on a low dose hormone (birth control) to help regulate and make things more comfortable. I would suggest testing again, if it comes up negative again, then I would call and make an appointment with the doctor. I hope this helps!

You ought to do another pregnancy test. Menopause doesn't cause larger breasts and sore nipples. Peri-menopause starts a couple years before actual menopause, which is most likely what you were experiencing with those irregular periods. You are still ovulating if you're having periods. Good luck!

Sounds like you need to see a doc. If you ware pregnant, you need care the baby you could be caring. Most likely menopause with your age and history of periods, but I'd be safe and not sorry.

It sounds to me like menopause or even pre-menstrual symptoms. I know that my symptoms have changed over the years.

Soooo...how old are you? What did your doctor tell you about your periods being 2 to 3 months apart? We are not doctors and need more information to be able to identify with you.

Those are not symptoms of perimenopause nor hormones.

You could be pregnant.

Get yourself checked at the Gyn.
