We just got him last night. He is 10 weeks old and VERY sweet. I noticed when we got him that he had dandruff and he still has a lot. Even after a bath today with some doggie shampoo that says "extra dry skin." Does anyone have any suggestions? Also, does anyone know if this is common in the breed?

Craig:

We just got him last night.. so perhaps he is just anxious in his new enviroment. He is VERY content. I'll see as time progresses. Thanks so much for your response.

Watch your puppy's diet. What have you been feeding him?
Stay away from food with any corn or corn by-products, most of the time it is the #1 cause for skin reaction in dogs.
You should only bathe your pup every 4 months at most for the first year and a half. No matter what type of shampoo you use , the chemicals are harsh and can strip the dogs coat of essential oils that help keep the coat and skin glossy.
Make sure that the food you feed your pup has a high (at least 27%) protein content derived from muscle and organ meat, not vegetable by-products(a cheap filler in most supermarket pet products.).
If you do change your pup's diet, gradually introduce the new food to keep from throwing off your pup's digestion and gastro-intestinal health. I would recommend a dry kibble for your
puppy. It is usually more balanced than wet food and helps in teeth and gum maintenance. Puppies love to chew.
Let me know if you have any more questions.

I have a Min Pin, and she gets "instant" dandruff when she's stressed. Does yours have dandruff all the time? Or just when she's scared or excited? My vet called it something and made it sound like this is common among Min Pins. If yours has dandruff all the time, then I guess you need to have a vet check it out.

I WOULD TAKE HIM TO THE VET AS HE MAY HAVE A SPECIAL PROBLEM WITH HIS SKIN AND THERE MAY BE SOMETHING THAT YOU CAN PICK UP THAT ALLEVIATES THE PROBLEM VERY QUICKLY. OTHERWISE, YOU MAY BUY MANY PRODUCTS AND GO THROUGH SEVERAL TRIAL AND ERROR PERIODS, NEEDLESS TO SAY THE POOR DOG IS SUFFERING ALL THE TIME WITH THE SKIN PROBLEM, AND STILL NOTHING WILL BE DONE. ALSO, IT MIGHT JUST BE A PROBLEM THAT TRANSMITS TO HUMANS, LIKE SCABIES, AND THEN ALL THE FAMILY WILL BE SCRATCHING AND HAVE TO BE TREATED.

yes...switch her to a food with NO byproducts and NO fillers with meat that is USDA organic, no colors or flavors or preservatives, no wheat, no soy....that has lots of oatmeal, and omega fatty acids. try wellness or eagle pack!
