They haven't got a sense of independence, that's why. They probably have misconceptions over what it means to date someone, and they want to stay close by you and think that that's the way to express it--by smothering you. It's partially an expression of their love, and partially their own fear of standing on their own. Clingy girls are, in general, insecure girls and hopelessly romantic. But that doesn't mean they can't mature.

For the same reason that guys get attached. Girls are in general, more comfortable showing their affection, and like to be close to their significant other. Guys do the same thing though! Make sure you don't have it confused with a girl just wanting to spend time, and have fun a lot with you. :) ... It may be hard to adjust to having a girlfriend who wants to utilize your time like that. Being young, and having your first boyfriends/girlfriends, you are testing the waters. And it's fun and exciting too, so just be aware. You'll see!

alot of times it's if they really like you...sometimes though it can be if they maybe feel threatened by somebody and they don't want to loose you.
