WRONG WRONG WRONG algae is NOT a plant or fungus. Algae is within the kingdom protista (Protists) and are not plants because they lack roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds. They are photosynthetic autotrophs and are also known as phytoplankton.

as for where they COME from they reproduce from existing algae cells, some split, and use various forms of reproduction
-------
As for their evolutionary origins, they most likely sprouted from chemoautotrophs living in toxic pools of chemicals on young Earth. The chemoautotrophs released carbon dioxide as a product of their respiration using the chemicals as energy. The atmosphere eventually became hospitable for algae and eventually plants, making an atmosphere with the oxygen byproduct of photosynthesis.

Algae (green pond scum, etc) is a form of bacteria that uses produces oxygen as a byproduct of photosynthesis. The more developed algae such as kelp are actually a different branch of the plant kingdom, but still uses light to produce oxygen as it makes various sugars for food.
