I found an older shih tzu in my neighborhood tonight. I went to my neighbors who were still up but no one was missing a dog. I will put out a sign tomorrow. I already have a dog...so keeping him is not an option.

How long should i wait before i turn him in? Is it better to go to a rescue org? I don't want him put down!!!

I think he is blind in one eye (keeps running into stuff) and he is a little tinkler if you know what i mean.

He had no collor or tag but he is clean!

Check with your neighbors first thing in the morning. This dog probably wondered away from it's home when let out in the dark. If it is blind it probably got lost.

Years ago I had a Schnauzer that was very old and was going blind. I wasn't aware that she couldn't see that well. I let her out like I always did to pee but she didn't come back like she always did. She ended up about 3 blocks away at a parking lot with bright lights.

The vet said she must have gotten turned around and walked toward the bright lights. That's all she could see. Maybe that is what happened to this dog. Someone in your neighborhood must be frantic looking for that little Shih Tzu.

The way I found mine was I called the police. Five minutes later they called and said someone found a dog at the parking lot. If you call the police they might have a report on a missing dog. I don't know how hard these rescue places work to find owners. I think they figure if someone lets a dog out and it turns into a stray that they don't deserve to own the dog. That's just my opinion. Good luck in finding the owners.

Call all the area vet's offices. His owner may have reported him missing there. Also, it is possible they may know who he belongs to. He might even be micro chipped. And a shih tzu rescue would take him but wait a bit and see if you can locate his owner. You can place an ad in the lost and found or call your local radio station and have them announce you found him. But don't give ALL information because someone may claim him that doesn't actually own him. Don't reveal his markings and color. Let the owner give you those details or anything that is unusual about him.

If I was in your position then i would hold on to the dog make flyer's but don't let the dog around your animals if it has a disease it could easily give it to them. Keep the dog in a garage, utility room, or a room you and you pets don't go in a lot. Tell your vet and friends to look out for people missing a dog. If someone tries to claim it ask about markings and such (They could just want a free dog). If No one claims it in about 4 weeks take it to an animal shelter. One that wont put him down if no one claims. Well now you have my advice. Good Luck!!

If you can't keep him, take him to the local animal shelter. If you don't want to do that, then at least notify your local animal shelters that you have the dog, in case the owner calls trying to find their dog.

If he is blind in one eye, he may have gotten away from his owner and could not find his way back. Or someone does not want the dog anymore because of his obvious medical problems and dumped him in your neighborhood. Some people are awful about doing that.

I would wait a few days. Put up flyer's and go door knocking. If the owners cared, they will be looking everywhere for him. Take him to a no-kill shelter or just keep him for a while. If anybody comes and asks you for the dog, ask a few questions about his colour, size, weight etc. so that you know they are the right owners and not someone just looking for a free dog.

Give it a week. Put flyers everywhere... in local vets, in local supermarkets, in petstores, and around the neighborhood.

Also, the newspaper lets you put in found pet ads for free. So do that, too.

If all else fails, find a no-kill shelter or shih tzu rescue to take him in.

#1 take him to a vet - they can look for tatoos , & check for micro chips - this should be a free service

you can ask around the neighbourhood if anyone knows who the dog's owner is -

NEVER take him/her to the pound

Posters are a great idea around the neighbour in grocery stores etc...

theres a few sites ones petfinder I believe that may be helpful - if all else fails there are breed/ animal rescues whould could take him in ( make surethey are no kill, and have a good reputation - not just reandom persons looking for dogs to resell etc )
good luck !!

Take him to a local vet and have him scanned for a chip. if you get a hit that is great and you can notify his owner. IF not See of your neighborhood has a no kill animal shleter. take a pic of him and make some flyers and give them to local vets offices and stores. If yoiu call local authorities they my keep for a few days then PTS. so i would go that route unless you HAVE too. your local dog warden may be able to help also.... GOOD LUCK

Call your local police and let them know. Call any veterinarians in your neighborhood. Call the humane shelter or city pound. These are all places that I have called and let know when I have found stray dogs. The more people that you let know, the better chance of the dogs owners being found!!
