I went for my medical on on Friday last and hd to under go a hearing test ina booth. I have had Tinitus for about 20 years now and I live with it. Will this have any bearing on my acceptance to the AFP Protective Service. The other thing is that I swim and use ear plugs. In the past months I had a middle ear infection, I went to my doctors he prescribed anti biotics and ear drops. I have not used the ear drops as yet should I get the presecription filled and see if eases my Tinnitis. I have fears now that my careeer path will shattered by the hearing test results.

Many times tinnitus is completely unrelated to the ability to hear. That is, it is often completely unrelated to hearing loss. Hearing requirements for various jobs depend upon objective evidence from a hearing test. Tinnitus is completely subjective, and therefore there is absolutely NO test that can "pick this up."

So...you likely have absolutely nothing to worry about. It is sometimes related to hearing loss, but only the hearing test will tell...

I don't know what kind of ear drops your doctor prescribed, but the oral antibiotics are most important for resolving otitis media. The ear drops may just be a mild anesthetic to relieve pain (antipyrine/benzocaine). If so, the drops will not help with your tinnitus.

This all being said, several medications cause tinnitus (prescription and over the counter meds, like aspirin). Talk to you doctor about the meds you take, they may (and often are) the culplrit. There are also other causes that can be treated, so go see your physician about this.

But tinnitus does NOT cause hearing loss, so don't worry. If you pass your hearing test, you are good to go...

Hope this helped some...
